Sperm Question..
10
Thu, 10-09-2003 - 11:05am
Warning: the question is kinda blunt.

Is it true that the longer a man waits to ejaculate.. the more of his "waiting" sperm ..

die?

How long can sperm live (after being produced in his body).. before they die?

(I have a real reason for asking this)

Thanks for your help.

I have been told they live for 48 hours if they are in the right cervical fluid... Are you asking about how long they live "inside" the man after he makes them? I guess I am a bit confused by your question...

Yes. I'm asking how long the sperm live inside HIS body after they're produced..

(before ejaculation)..

I know that sperm isn't produced at the exact time ejaculation.. they've already been

produced and are waiting.. I just can't remember how long they live before he.. um..

"shoots blanks".. lol...

Thanks for helping.

Well...going by the info we got when doing a s/a... yes they can "die" or at least get old and feeble if not ejaculated for a long time. You want "fresh" sperm for TTC (and s/a) so they recommend ejaculation about 3-5 days before the s/a for the freshest sample- I will assume that is the same that you would want when bding. If DH has not ejaculated in weeks or whatever they will be old and not viable.

Does this help, Jen?

I'm a little confused by the question and the answers LOL.

Sperm production is a constant thing, every moment there are sperm dying and sperm being created (within the testes). I think the hold thing before a S/A is to build up a good quantity "sample". If DH doesn't ejaculate for weeks, some will die, but just as many new ones will be being produced, plus he will just end having a wet dream (sorry TMI) but that is the body's natural regulatory system, if you/he are not letting them out *snicker* the body will let them out for you LOL.

Could you be more specific with your question? TMI does not matter here plus remember this is anonymous we have no Idea who you are so don't be embarrassed to be even more "blunt".

If your question is coming from the BD every other day area, that is mostly for men with Low Sperm Counts, the every other day allows there to be "more" sperm in the BD thereby giving a better chance of Fertilization. Without a low sperm count, BD'ing every day during ovulation is the norm.

FYI I think the actual production time of sperm for total turnover start to death is 3 months. I get this number from the Male Infertility Board where I asked a question because DH was in an accident 11 years ago with some testicular swelling and I was questioning whether or not it would affect our TTC chances.

Having sex to much is bad for men w/ low sperm count But I also think I have heard that to little sex is bad too, But I dont know why or where I have heard that. Maybe its beacuse some dead ones will still be in there mixing w/ the good ones giving him not a very good sperm mixture. so maybe you should have sex at least 4 or five days before you fertile time to get rid of some of the dead ones but I really dont know. Just a thought.

Good luck!!!!!

I knew I had read it somewhere....and going through male fertility sites I have saved this is what I found:

HOW TO ENHANCE YOUR REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH

  • Stop smoking. Smoking is linked to low sperm counts and sluggish motility, and recent findings suggest a 64 percent increase in miscarriage when both partners smoke or when just the man smokes.
  • Give up marijuana. Long-term use of marijuana in men results in a low sperm count and sperm that exhibit abnormal patterns of development.
  • Stay off the sauce. Chronic alcohol abuse damages the intricate plumbing of the male reproductive system, reducing a man's ability to produce normally formed sperm cells.
  • Ease up on intense exercise. Men who exercise excessively may be reducing their sperm count due to the heat that builds up around the testicles during strenuous exercise.
  • Up your C. Low vitamin C levels may cause sperm to clump together, rendering as many as 16 percent of all men infertile.
  • Check into your antibiotics. Some groups of antibiotics have been shown to affect sperm quality temporarily by decreasing count and motility. These groups are nitrofurans (nitrofurazone or nitrofurantoin) and macrolides (erythromycin).
  • Stay clear of environmental poisons and hazards. These include pesticides/insecticides, organic solvents, lead, ionizing radiation, heavy metals, and toxic chemicals.
  • Check your nutrition. If you're malnourished or not getting enough of the right foods and nutrients, your sperm count could suffer.
  • Keep your scrotum cool. Watch out for excessive heat in the scrotal area. Wear loose-fitting underwear (not tight jockey shorts), and avoid tight-fitting jogging pants. Avoid hot tubs, hot baths, saunas, or hot work environments.
  • Abstain, but not too long. Brief periods of sexual restraint (three to six days) seem to increase both the volume and potency of semen. Prolonged abstinence, on the other hand, will result in a higher volume of older sperm, which exhibit decreased motility.

Good info and thanks, I'm sure regular "release" helps keep production up LOL.

I look at it kindof like skin renewal, some is always falling off, but some is always coming up new under it. However, regular exfoliation is good to keep it new and shiney..... LOLOL

My response was coming from it sounding like she was wondering if an entire "batch" of sperm went bad...and you had to wait for a new batch to get ready.

Could be me misreading though I think I've had too much coffee today LOLOLOL.

Well.. Thank you all for your very informative responses..

It does seem, though.. from the info provided (all together).. that it really IS useless

to ttc at this point in time. :( (can I cry now??)

*now I think I'm depressed/really upset*

Oh well.. That's life, I guess.. :(

Jen, don't be depressed, you BD'ed when you O'ed. You are right on target. Sperm renews constantly, even though DH hadn't let any out recently and therefore may have had a few more dead in there than normal, think of all the new ones that had just been in there waiting to get let loose!!!!!!!!!!!

I think we confused you with our posts. Just because DH hadn't "released" in a while due to his illness (I read your other post in 2ww) doesn't mean all his sperm are dead, not by a long shot. Don't over stress yourself, you have just as much of a chance as anyone!!!!

The references to releasing often etc are for "best case scenarios" and by no way, shape or means, mean that if you don't follow them you won't get PG!!!!!!!!!!!
