stroke and pregnancy

Hi all,

I am 30 years old and my husband and I want to start a family.  I had a stroke when I was a 8 months old (luckily have not had any since) and my OBGYN is concerned that I am at a high risk of having another one during pregnancy.  I am in the process of scheduling an appointment with a neurologist, but I am pretty discourage.  I been trying to research online on people that had strokes early in life and cannot find anything about long term effects and pregnancy.  I am hoping to find support here since my husband is concern about my medical history and feels that it is to risky to have our own children  Thank you for anyone reading this.  Appreciate any support or guidance.

Thank you for the reply.  I have an appointment with a neurologist in a few weeks.  From what I was told it was a genetic "glitch".  I want to see what the neurologist has to say before I meet with my OBGYN.  I will keep you posted.  I appriciate the support Melissa.

Hi Katie!  I can see why your doctor and husband are concerned, pregnancy can bring so many unknowns.  I'm glad you are going to see a neurologist, I think going over your medical history with him will give you more information so you can better know the risks.  Do they know what caused your stroke when you were so little?  Are you on any medication to prevent them?  You might also want to talk with a high risk ob/gyn to see what they have to say and how they would treat a pregnancy with your risk factors.  They might have seen patients with similar histories.  Please keep us posted on what you find out.  (((HUGS)))
