Sunday's Question.... C-sect or vaginal?

I just had my annual exam last week, and it gave me a good opportunity to discuss things with my ob/gyn. I go to a large office, which has 8 physicians. Fortunately, my doc said she has delivered over 80% of her patients over the past 12 years.... no 'passing around' to the other docs....

But, one thing that surprised me a bit, (since I'm new to this....) apparently, if you aren't in labor by your due date, they strongly recommend (and is standard practice procedure) to either induce labor in hopes of vaginal delivery, or schedule a c-section.

That got me to thinking.... what do you all plan on doing? I hear more and more about women scheduling their c-sections in their first/second trimester. I know most docs prefer you to have c-sections for your 2nd, 3rd, etc. child, if you'd already had one.

So.... anyone care to share their plans on this???

I had vaginal deliveries with my other 3 so once i am pg again I plan on going vaginally again. The doctors where I go are not really into the scheduling c sections unless there is a problem or you have had c sections before.

I plan on going vaginally unless I absolutely have to have a c-section.

I have had 4 previous c-sections, so I will be scheduling my next one in my first trimester, when/if I concieve.

With my first, it was totally unexpected. I was admitted into the hospital 3 weeks before my EDD, with severe pre-eclampsia and a week later I had a c/s because my blood pressure was dangerously high and my son was really big - estimated by u/s to be almost 11 lbs, but he was 9'3oz at birth. They thought I wouldn't be able to get him out anyway, with him being my first and they didn't want to chance the whole blood pressure issue.

ANYWAY, I cried and cried when I found out it was going to be a c/s but it was actually great! No pain at all, a tiny scar and no complications...and no problems with my *woowhoo* ;) So, I elected to have another with my 2nd, and with my 3rd and 4th it was mandatory. My doc says I can have as many as I want, I always heard you couldn't have more than 3, but thats just not true. Good for me, huh?

This is something I feel very strongly about. There is no medical reason to induce at the due date simply because you are due. If a true medical concern arises, then yes, it's a wonderful option, but

Unless there is a very good medical reason or risk (which I'll confirm with a 2nd and 3rd opinion if necessary), I will be having an un-induced vaginal delivery. Even if I'm past my supposed "due date" (which is something I don't put much faith in anyway). The birth center I hope to go to seems to be very good about natural deliveries, at least from the basic research I've done on it.
This is another really great "daily question"! Here's to hoping that all of us can have our dream deliveries sooner rather than later!

Hi,

I had a c-section with DS. He was due on 5/12/04 and late April of that year my doctor said he was measuring big and scheduled me to be induced on 5/4/04. I do not recommend it! Let your baby come naturally if you can.

Long story, short, DS was not too big and after 29 hours of labor I had a c-section. All was going okay until I was given more drugs.

I will go c-section again because the experience was so bad and

I'll more than likely be having another c-section.

With my DS the c-section was not planned. My water started to leak at 35 weeks. After they figured out what was going on (2 days later) I was admitted and labor was induced. After 8 hours my contractions had stopped and I was still not dilated at all! The doctor did an ultrasound and found that DS had turned breech. They didn't want to take a chance on turning him and possibly hurting him since they didn't know how much fluid was left in me (I had already been leaking water for 45+ hours and having too little fluid could cause damage to him physically). So the only other option was a c-section which they highly recommended and we agreed at that point out of fear of something happening to DS. But he was born 5 weeks early and weighed 5 pounds 10 ounces and had to spend 3 weeks in the NICU.

But unless my doctor mentions a VBAC, we more than likely will just do another c-section. And plus I've read that uterine ruptures are common if you try a vaginal birth after only having a c-section and never having a vaginal birth.

Good question!

I planned on having my DD vaginally but ended up with a C section. she was due 7/1 and by 7/12 she wasn't here yet... my doc felt she was a big kid so she induced me... I was ready to push in 8 short hours but after pushing for 3.25 HOURS (which felt like 5 days) we decided to go ahead with the c section.

My DS ended up being 9 lbs 14 ounces... she was HUGE!! She simply refused to drop!
Luckily, I had a wonderful experience with my C/S, no complications what so ever. I felt as good as new in about a week! I took my prescribed pain meds because I was in so much pain from nursing not from the surgery.

I would like to try a VBAC next time... I think I will plan for a VBAC (that is if my doctor doesn't have too many objections) then if my next baby is also too big we will cross that bridge when we get to it.

With DD I never went into labor on my own. When I was just shy of 2 weeks past due the Dr decided to deliver the baby via c-section. Because I wasn't "ripe" (meaning I wasn't dilating or effacing) he felt that inducing would only cause hours of painful labor that would probably end up in a c-section anyway. If I ever manage to get pg again I will try for a VBAC.

Honestly, I think of just depends on the Dr. Some will only do c-sections if there's no other resort. Some prefer to do c-sections over inductions. My doctor prefered to let the woman's body dictate, even if that meant letting her go over due. The best thing you can do is decide what you want out of your pregnancy and labor, then find a Dr that will go along with that. HTH!

I have my annual scheduled in December and plan to talk about things then. (unless of course I get PG before then).

But I am ssuming due to my weight I will probably have a c-section. Though I would love to go vaginally, I dont know if that will be possible. The reasearch i have done of Overweight births tends to lend twards Csection.
