Sunday's Question.... C-sect or vaginal?

I just had my annual exam last week, and it gave me a good opportunity to discuss things with my ob/gyn. I go to a large office, which has 8 physicians. Fortunately, my doc said she has delivered over 80% of her patients over the past 12 years.... no 'passing around' to the other docs....

But, one thing that surprised me a bit, (since I'm new to this....) apparently, if you aren't in labor by your due date, they strongly recommend (and is standard practice procedure) to either induce labor in hopes of vaginal delivery, or schedule a c-section.

That got me to thinking.... what do you all plan on doing? I hear more and more about women scheduling their c-sections in their first/second trimester. I know most docs prefer you to have c-sections for your 2nd, 3rd, etc. child, if you'd already had one.

So.... anyone care to share their plans on this???

I had my 1st daughter via C-section when I was 20 years old...she was breech. I was fortunate to be young and recovered very quickly! It wasn't at all bad & scary like you might think a C-section would be. At 25 I had my 2nd DD and she was a VBAC (Vaginal Birth after C-section) There was never any issue of automatically having a 2nd C-section just b/c I had one the 1st time (even though my 2nd child was a whopping 9lb 6oz!)....but I am sure if they had done my C-section for other reasons besides her being breech, they may have pushed for a 2nd one. I went on to deliver my son vaginally as well.... all 3 births were very different, the easiest being my son...arrived at hospital at 3am, epidural at 5am, he was out with 2 pushes at 7:49am!

Thank you to the girls on The Signature Making for Beginners Board for my wonderful siggies!!

I am glad you found a doctor to fit your needs. What is your personal reason for doing a Csec? Besides the extra 2 weeks with your precious little one :)

I was one of those that thought she wanted a C-section. They were telling me Carter was going to be 10 pounds and it was going to be hard. I was freaking out.

He came on his own 3 weeks early and was only 7 lbs, 8 oz. (Thank God!) It was such an easy, quick delivery that I thank my lucky stars I didn't continue to insist on a C-section with my doc. Vaginal all the way for me!

As my sister already said (Btw, Happy b-day twin sis Katie!), I had a c-section with my DS. They induced me 2 times for high blood pressure (once 4 weeks early, the second time 2 weeks early), and the second time, the next morning, they broke my water to "Speed me up".. yeah right.. they did pitocin, etc. Then at 2-3 cm an epidural to speed me up. After all of this, at 10:08pm, I had my son via s-section. I never made it past 3cm. Looking back, I see that they rushed me, they never had me up walking or anything to actually help my body do it's natural thing... but your first baby, you completely trust the doctor, right?? I was 20 years old. Then, with DD 2 years later... I couldn't find anyone to allow a VBAC and my doctor said no one around here would do it.. So, repeat c/s. After she was born, I found out that the local birthing center would've done it!!! AGH!! So, here we are, ttc #3. I have searched everything around here and the only delivery I can do is a repeat c/s. I did find a doctor, but the hospital won't agree to it.

I had a c-section with my son after 28 o hours of labor. My water broke and nothing happened, I wasnt getting any contractions or anything so had to be induced. Well after 28 hours, dilating to 9 and no going further I had to have a c-section, I was really sad about that. I hated every aspect of it. I will be trying a VBAC for #2.

I'm a lurker and just wanted to add my experience on c-sec and vaginal births. I'm new to this so I'm not up on the lingo, sorry.

I had a scheduled c-sec with my first DD in Aug'01 since she was breach and I was low on fluid. The incision became infected one month later and I was back in the hospital for surgery and the incision was left open to heal naturally. I became pregnant with 2nd DD in February '03 and really wanted a vaginal birth since I missed so much after the c-sec with DD #1. My wonderful Dr in St. Albert, AB (Canada) allowed me to do a VBAC and it was wonderful being part of the birthing process. I found healing from c-sec or
