When Does Age Matter?

When does age start to matter in regards to fertility and ability to conceive after being on BCP etc.? This question is definitely just out of curiousity for me because I am only 20 and I know I have nothing to worry about yet, in fact I suppose most would say I am too young to be TTC (lol). Anyways, also if you don't mind my asking.. how old were you when you had your first; or how old are you if you are TTC#1?

Best Wishes to all!

I was 32 when I had my first child and I am now pregnant with #2 at age 34- my DH is going to be turning 35 shortly. I have heard that fertility starts to really decline at age 35 so I suppose we are getting this baby in just under the wire. Most of my friends waited until their 30's to start trying for a baby and they all have children now so I guess whatever age you decide to start trying is the right age for you.

Hey Kristin,

Thought I would add my reply. I’m 23 and DH is 25. We are TTC #1.

Kristin,

I'm 36 and DH is 34...and we are TTC#1. I've worried at times about age and wondering if I waited too long to settle in and start a family...but my doc tells me that more and more women are waiting until their 30s to start TTC...Women are getting more education these days than previous generations, establishing careers, and often waiting longer to get married...all of which can push back the decision to have a baby until a later age. This is both good and bad...I guess...seeing as fertility does start to decline. But, most women are able to have very healthy pregnancies in their 30s and even into the 40s. I've given myself a 4-year "window" of opportunity to have a baby (or two?) before I'm 40...hope it works out!

GL to you!
