BTDT moms - What age should a baby or toddler give up the pacifier? How old is too old? What’s your pacifier policy?

For our members that are waiting to be moms - What do you think your pacifier policy will be?

We want to hear how you will be handling this issue with your own kids and what you think about how other moms handle it as well.

Before I had DS (and I was the most wonderful parent ever :P) I felt that no child of mine would ever have a soother. Then he was born and decided to use me as one and I very quickly changed my tune. For us getting rid of it wasnt an issue as it just didnt soothe him so at about 3 or 4 months I just got rid of them. He was a very high needs baby.

I am TTC #1 so I've never had the fun of trying to wean a child off of the pacifier.

Both of my boys had pacifiers and they both gave them up at some point in the first 6 months all on their own. So I haven't yet had to deal with putting a limit on them. The bottle is a totally different story ...

I remember calling my mom in the middle of the night begging her to bring me a pacifier from the gifts we got with my first son. All he wanted to do was suck and I was tired of it being my nipple or my fingers. The nurses wouldn't give me one no matter how many times I asked them. Now my second son I couldn't get the nurses to stop shoving the pacifier in his mouth. LOL

I'm still TTC#1 too but I do have experience weaning kids off the paci from working for years in daycares. From my experiences, 1 yr old is the easiest time to wean them off of them. Same with thumb sucking. The older they got the harder it was. I will give my baby a pacifier before I let them suck their thumb but at a year old I will start weaning them. By two they should be 100% weaned off of the paci IMO. I will also have my baby weaned off the bottle 100% by 10-12 months. Nothing irritates me more than seeing a kid toddler walking around with a bottle.

My absolute deadline is: when they are trying to talk with it in their mouth! lol
