Is 40 mg progesterone/day enough?

My midwife prescribed the natural progesterone cream, to be rubbed into skin BID 20 mg each time. Has anyone been does that low? From what I've read people were using 100 mg or more/day. I've been rubbing it into my wrists, inner thigh (like the directions say) and also vaginally but I can't get it up there very well. LOL. Should I call and ask for more or just hang tight??

When I took it, I took the 200mg pills orally twice a day, then after several weeks, we switched to once a day, but I was already pg when I started taking it, so I have no idea...

That seems like a low amt to me.

When I started Progesterone, a yr ago, UGH, My MW rxd 50mg/2x/day suppositories. The first cycle, it gave me a few days to my LP but I started taking it 12DPO. The next cycle it gave me maybe a day. The following cycle & also my first m/c cycle, I added an extra suppository & used cream as well, so it was probably around 190mg/day. I had my progesterone tested after I started spotting & it was low.

After that they told me they would do whatever I wanted so I asked for 400mg Prometrium & thats what Ive been taking since. However I guess I should also add that I was using 1/2 suppository 1/2 oral w/my following m/c as well.

My RE now dropped me down to 200mg, vaginally. I honestly dont think that will be enough for me. Im giving it a whirl to see what my LP does.

I cant remember are your LPs short?

Hi Amy... wow, 40mg doesn't seem like it would do much to change anything. I take 200mg of Prometrium orally starting at around 4dpo. Do you have a short LP? And of course if you do get a BFp this cycle I'm sure you'll have you prog tested ASAP, right?

My last three LPs besides the chemicals were 14,11, and 13 days. I don't seem to have many signs of prog deficiency (I have predicatable cycles and temp shifts)but I was tested with my last positive HPT at 12 DPO and my level was 9. That could be a falling # because the pregnancy just wasn't viable though. I'm not sure what to think. Everyone says that they get lots of IPS from progesterone and I don't have any so far. That worries me that the dose is too low.

My MW did mention doing creams at first but I also thought it wouldnt do anything.
Your LPs look good so Im guessing your levels were probably low due to failing pregnancy.
I guess the same could have been said for me but when I started Progesterone I had 9 day LPs so I knew it was low even when Im not pregnant.

I dont really think you'd get the side effects from cream or that low of a dose.

According to my RE no one needs progesterone supplementation. HA! I guess you just have to wait for the perfect cycle where your levels are high enough, egg & sperm meet, etc, etc... ya right!

Mine, too and not just one of them but two dr's fromtwo different practices. This is the best way to explain their position:

If you have low and falling hCG's levels, your pregnancy is failing. Supplementing with hCG wouldn't save the pregnancy, it would only delay the enevitable - m/c. Progesterone (they say) is the same way. If your Progesterone levels are low and/or falling that is because the pregnancy is not viable and supplementing would only delay m/c not prevent it.

It's a very controversial subject as I know lots of women who swear it saved their pregnancies but I also have a hard time all these dr's who are experts in their fields all agree and are wrong KWIM?

But, then again at one point in time, all the experts believed the world was flat so who freaking knows?

Im not even talking about saving pregnancy though...she claims that there is no such thing as LPD.
So one would never need to supplement even to try & get pregnant.

So like I said Im supposed to have some sort of miracle happen & have implantation happen b4 my teeny 9 day LP & then hope that my body then doesnt try & flush it away. Or I have to wait for the magic cycle that I may have a longer LP & all the other stars align.

Ya know, my first RE said this to me and I quote:

"If you have an LPD - if such a thing even EXHISTS and I don't think it does - that can really only be addressed by accupunture."

That is when I switched RE's. And this guy was world renound. My OB had IF issues and SHE went to him to get pg. But I was like, dude, I know enough about this process to know there IS such a think as LPD and the fact that you don't think there is leads me to believe you are NOT the dr for me.

Ya I guess its not uncommon for OBs to think there is no such thing as LPD.

AT least my RE still gives me progesterone even if she doesnt believe it will do anything. Its also not like I 'see' an RE. I saw her twice for tests. I wish I had insurance to see an RE but then again I guess I dont really 'need' one. At least not right now.

Ive got high hopes for this cycle, which means Ill probably get AF tomorrow ;) I had a ton of cramping this am @ 5DPO

I am on 200mg progesterone vaginally 1X/day (at night), and it has extended my LP from 8-9 days to 14-15 days.
