Folic acid: Does 4 mg = 400 mcg?

Hello all,

I don't remember my conversion charts. All the folic acid pills I find are measured in mcg, but my doc told me to take 4 mg per day. I bought some that have 400 mcg per pill, does this equal the 4 mg I'm supposed to take? And is 4 mg per day about the same amount as everyone else's docs are prescribing? This is on top of the folic acid in the prenatals I'm taking daily.

Thanks,
-Emily

no, i don't think that's right. 400 mcg = .4 mg mcg stands for microgram. 1000 micrograms = 1 mg.

I agree - that was why my OB gave me a Rx for folid acid (1mg pills), so I wouldn't have to take so many OTC folic acid pills to reach the 4mg/day he wanted me to have in addition to what's in my pre-natal.

My math is kinda rusty, but I think you're right!

I got this right off of a conversion chart on askjeeves:

1 microgram (mcg)

  • = 0.001 milligram

yep, tara that is the correct number, you have to move the decimal 3 spots over to make a milligram so it's 1000 micrograms to make 1 milligram.

this converts directly

http://www.onlineconversion.com/weight_metric.htm

if you enter 400 mcg and tell it to convert to milligrams it will tell you it equals 0.4 mg

Holy cow. I have to take 10 of those pills, plus my prenatal, plus my baby aspirin each morning?! :o

I have to find a higher dose folate pill. :D

Emily,

That was why my OB gave me a script for folic acid - he didn't want me to have to worry about taking THAT many pills a day. I still take 4 pills for the folic acid, but it's better than taking 8 or 10 just for that, when I'm already taking a slew of others for other things.

HTH and GL! =-)

Don't worry about it Tara! I was a science buff before DS's that's the only reason I know! I just didn't want her not taking the amount of folate her doc told her to!

It's not easy to figure all this stuff out I hope I didn't act like a know-it-all!

Don't worry about it, Tara! I'm lousy with those confusing decimal points, so I was sitting here second-guessing myself - and then had myself completely confused. ;-)
