I have short LP too and used prog for all my IUI and IVF cycles. I'm the kind of woman who doesn't have breakthrough bleeding though. So I have to get a BFN, stop taking prog and wait for AF.

basically progesterone is what helps to prepare the lining of the uterus to accept the egg AND to help nourish it until the placenta can take over. The corpus luteum (what's left of the follicle after ovulation) is supposed to put out enough progesterone to be able to sustain a pregnancy. if your progesterone levels are low then it can impair your ability to have a successful implantation and successful growth prior to the placenta taking over.

here are a couple of useful articles/ links:

I had a luteal phase on the short side - 10-11 days. I just started seeing an RE in June and we were getting ready to do an IUI. He said that after the IUI, he was going to put me on progesterone supplements to extend the LP - hopefully to a more "typical" 14 days.

*****PG mentioned*****
I got PG before we did the IUI, and he put on progesterone supplements as soon as I got my BFP. When your LP is short, the fear is that your body is not producing enough progesterone on its own to sustain a pregnancy, and in theory, the supplements will help that. There is a whole school of thought out there that says that the progesterone does not really help sustain the PG - that if was viable, it would be fine no matter what. I think this is probably true, but then I am still taking the progesterone, just in case!!
