RE appt tomorrow - nervous yet excited

As you all can see by my signature, I have been through the IUI rollercoaster with getting a BFP the first one which resulted inan ectopic. I have had no luck since despite hubby's awesome sperm numbers and decent amount of eggs. We have anappointment with our RE to determine what the next steps are and I know he will suggest IVF.

I am not sure exactly what questions to ask. From their website, they have many different options and pricing structures and Ihave no clue what is best for the money and chances. Is this something that I should shop around for? Try another fertilityclinic? I am scared that if we do that, then the process would take extra long because they probably would want to take alltheir own tests. I don't know.

The other issue is finding funding for this next adventure and I know a lot of you can relate. I do have 2 friends who gotpregnant on their 3rd IVF try and I hope it doesn't take that long. All I can think of is dollar signs......

Is there a cheap place to get all the drugs that I will have to take? I know that I used Freedom for Ovidrel. I am just so clueless and never REALLY thought I would have to deal with IVF.

Hopefully I will know more tomorrow. We are taking a break / trying it the natural way this cycle which I doubt will bring a BFP. I have a feeling this IVF thing won't be a quick and easy process. The upside would be the higher pregnancy rates.

Girl - what do you want to know? I can give you the scoop on my experience and what I've found through my IVF journey...

I was in the same boat - what questions do I ask and honestly, my doctor covered off on most everything in the inital consult. I had questions as we went that were spurred from what he was saying, but they are usually pretty throughout. They gave me a nice little book that I brought to every appt. that laid each step out for me. The nurses were so fabulous and they were such a big help and answered questions as we went along as well. They have you go through an injection class and it will freak you out a bit, but the stimulation drugs are so similar to the Ovidrel shot that you got that down. I was terrified of the HCG injection and the Progesterone in Oil injections as those are the sub Q's like the Ovidrel are - they are the intramuscualar butt shots. They prep DH's to give you the IM injections, but honestly, my DH botched my stomach shots when I let him try, that I just wanted to do it myself and they didn't hurt - it's more a mental thing.

I would definately go get a second opinion from another clinic. My original RE was good, but his bedside manner was a little "ugh" for me so I went to my current RE and he was so warm, seemed really compassionate, had a good sense of humor and was actually $4K cheaper. He was just as good, but I think the reason he was less expensive is that he is in practice with 4 other RE's so they rotate through and I had a different dr to my harvest and transfer, but I liked him just as much as my RE.

Like Chelle said - I found that Kohll's was the cheapiest by far. You'd probably use Follistim or Gonal for your stimulation meds - I was on Follistim and it was $720 at Kohll's

Thanks everyone...

Ann -

I am 36 and DH is 42. I appreciate all your comments and will check out the other board. My DH and I came out of the meeting with totally different perspectives which is kind of annoying. I am the type of person who just likes to 'DO" and not hem and haw about things. We did decide to check out another place that my friend recommends because she had her IVF baby there.

My view from meeting:
1. IVF is recommended with either the 1 fresh and 1 FET package or the assurance package that is about $25,000 which includes 3 fresh and unlimited FET cycles within a 30 month period and you would get about $17,000 back if no live birth. This price is without medicine. Ouch...

2. He said I could start with my next period (BCP) if I wanted.

DH view from meeting:
1. RE didn't exactly say "I recommend IVF". I think he did by the way he talked. He said we could do a 7th IUI but if I have a tube issue it might not work anyway. We don't know if there is a tube problem and I asked about an HSG and he said that at this point, it would just cost more because the next steps are IVF anyway.I have quite a bit of pain with an IUI and he said an HSG was much worse.

2. On the assurance package, I noticed it mentioned BMI as a factor in deciding who is offered that. I asked about that and the doctor said that a recent published study mentioned a higher BMI might decrease your chance of conception by 15%. He also mentioned an unpublished study that says your chances drop 50% with a higher BMI. My hubby thinks we should take 6 months off to lower my BMI to increase our odds. I am telling you right now that I am NOT waiting 6 months. I MIGHT be convinced to wait 2-3 months. I am 36 and not getting any younger here.

--------

We still need to figure out the money situation and which package would be good. I am going to call on Monday to get in for a consult with another fertility clinic to see if they would recommend the same things. I just hope things don't take forever since I have been trying for a baby for so long. I am getting impatient and I think we are taking a step back. I want action.
