Totally devastated right now. I do have shingles. When I told my primary doctor I had iui and was in 2ww he was like oh that is horrible hopefully you are not pregnant, it would just be better if you do not get pregnant this cycle because if you do this virus is horrible and it probably will end itself later on anyways.......me holding back tears in front of him and the thoughts of getting up and ripping his head off. Anyways, he prescribed me acyclovir and prednisone to take and I have to go back in a week to see if I can get cleared to go back to work. Yep no work for a week......which is usually my best distraction from the waiting. Also I have read a few different things online that state the risks of shingles during pregnancy are low......I am going to email my RE and see if I can pick his brain on the subject.

Over emotional and basically feeling like crap.

Oh Andi, that's terrible!!!! I'm so sorry you have to go though having shingles along with the fear of possibly being pg along with it. I'll keep you in my prayers. {{{{{HUGS}}}}}

Oh, Andi, I am so sorry. I've had them before several times. I remember talking to my OB about it last year and she said it would be bad to get while pg and I can't remember if it would be ok to take the Acyclovir. But as a microbiology major, the virus is in the herpes family and moms w/ herpes have babies all the time. So I would say, do more research and def talk to your RE.

Shingles is very closely related to chicken pox. If you ever had chicken pox as a child, you are at risk for singles when you are an adult. The virus is threatening to a pg somehow but I don't remember exactly how. Kelly was just tested for all this and I know she knows the details. Kelly, can you elaborate on this please?

Most of what I read is that getting chicken pox virus during pregnancy is more of a concern than shingles and risks are low however I don't know that research has been done on the effect during 2ww.....but I did find one account on the net of someone who got shingles 2dpo with her now healthy daughter.....so I'm sticking with that as my research. I mean really at this point not much I can do but treat it and try, TRY not to stress, LOL. Thanks for all the feedback ladies. Bored out of my mind. RE didn't get back to me but I've decided it won't change anything so I'm not worried about it.

Andi - so sorry you have shingles, that just plain sucks. My RE just tested me to see if I had immunity to a bunch of diseases including chicken pox. I sort of had the chicken pox as a kid, but not a lot of them and it turns out that I am not immune. So my RE recommended that I have the vaccine before we do the IUI cycle. Apparently, if you get chicken pox while you are PG, there can be some pretty serious complications, birth defects, etc. Anyway, I was told to get the vaccine once AF shows and then I would have to take a cycle off.

I was kind of freaked out and had the same reaction as your doctor - I said, "oh no, I hope I am not PG this cycle!" My RE said, well, if you are, don't worry about it. We recommend you get the vaccine, but if you are PG and can't get it, your risk of exposure is pretty low. Plus, I made it through my PG with my daughter just fine.

Turns out I am PG so again, I am just trying not to freak out about my risk of exposure. My DD goes to preschool but all of those kids have to be vaccinated, so I am hoping for the best.

If you are PG this cycle, you're still really early on, right? The shingles should be gone soon....My guess is that if you have to have them, being 3 or 4 weeks PG will be a lesser risk than getting them farther into the PG when the embryo has developed into a fetus. I am not a medical expert of course and I would definitely ask your RE right away - the RE is going to be able to address your concerns much better than the regular doctor. (((hugs))) hang in there girl.
