I mentioned in my other post that my ob is a total idiot, so I am going to switch, but I had my TSH done yesterday at my a appt. It was 2.3, in March it was 5.6, weird cause I didn't take meds or do anything different. do you know what can cause such a difference? Is it possible that my m/c caused this change? is 2.3 an ok level when ttc? Thanks, Jen

Hi Jen,

I am hypothyroid so I have done quite a bit of research on this. Yes, sometimes pregnancy can kick start your thyroid, so to speak, and thus lower your tsh value. Normally it goes the other way around though. And since you've had a higher tsh reading over 5.0 I would have them monitor it to make sure it doesn't go back up. The ideal tsh in order to get and maintain a pregnancy is under 2.0 so it can be a factor in getting and staying pregnant. You're pretty close and I would say that as long as you stay in that range you'd be fine, but you don't want to let it get much higher. Are you symptomatic? I ask because 2.3 is perfectly normal and some people feel great at 2.3 but other people are symptomatic unless their tsh is lower than that.

When I had my m/c my tsh had gone up to 3.49 and I suspect it was a factor in the m/c. There's no way to know for sure. I brought my levels down to borderline hyperthyroid (not on purpose) in order to ttc again. I just got my BFP and will have my tsh tested Monday. Last time I checked it, it was 0.11 though so I'm hoping it's gone up a bit, but not too much. It's really a crazy game of checks and balances, but it's important to get regulated and keep it regulated when ttc and pg.

HTH!

Thanks so much. I am always cold, dry skin and usually constipated, and recently tired, but also have some hyper symptoms such as anxiety and rapid heart rate. I guess I should get tested regularly. How often do you go? I definitely don't want it to impact ttc. Jen

During a significant event like pg, m/c or while I'm ttc I go about every 4 weeks if it seems regulated or 2 weeks if the dose is being changed or I'm feeling different. Otherwise when I'm not pg or ttc I go about every 6 weeks to 3 months again depending on how I feel.

I'd definitely ask for a standing requisition and get them to monitor it for awhile.
