Feeding Question

Jackie is almost 8 mos old now and I am sick of pumping out 1 or 2 ounces of milk for her rice cereal every morning. I do this manually, and so I need to make sure one breast is engorged enough in the morning and the whole thing is just a pain and uncomfortable.

Can I use cows milk instead now or is too early? Sometimes, if I can't pump out enough milk, I use water - but its hit or miss as to whether she will eat it. Also is soy milk better than cow's? Dr. Spock seems to be against cow's milk for some reason - but that is what I drink (DH drinks soy however).

At 8 months, personally I wouldn't start cow's milk or soy milk.

I second what Jeska said -- cow's milk creates too large a curd in an infant's digestive tract, making it difficult for her to digest it. They get more efficient digestion at about 12 months, and that's when most pediatricians will say that it's fine for them to have it. Soy milk is generally OK, except that it's highly allergenic, so it's better to wait to introduce it until after 12 or 18 months, when your baby is not so likely to pick up an allergy just from exposure. When I got sick of pumping for Thales' cereal I used vanilla rice milk from the grocery store. It tastes a lot like human milk! I don't think Thales liked it quite as well, but he would eat it. Another trick I did is that when I used water with his cereal, I would mix it up with some kind of pureed fruit he liked so that he wouldn't notice so much that there was no mama milk in his cereal.

Thanks for the responses -

I'll pump for a while longer and then switch over to rice milk when I can't stand it anymore!!! The zucchini milk also sounds delicious! I grow squash and zucchinis in the back yard in the summer so I will have to try it out this year.

Rice milk is pretty yummy. A lot of Charlotte's allergic playmates' mommies use it. We didn't start Charlotte on soy or cow's milk until after a year at her pediatrician's recommendation. She drinks vanilla soy milk from her sippy, and hates cow's milk. (I like to think that I spoiled her for other dairy, but she loves yogurt and cheese. Maybe she's just missing the sweet taste of mama milk!)

I've never done zucchini milk but what a great idea. My mom always has more zucchini in her garden than she knows what to do with, LOL.

Also, in Charlotte's cereal, we used to use diluted white grape juice sometimes when I didn't have any pumped EBM on hand. (the pump and I did not get along, and Charlotte never really took a bottle after 3 months!) You can even use plain water in a pinch.

HTH!
