Doctor Gripe (Rant)

So I think I've mentioned that my doctor is not doing OB anymore and I will be switching to another practice for my prenatal care.

She used to be with a practice nearby my house to which she wants to refer me. After my scan on Tuesday, she gave me the number to a doctor for my CVS. I scheduled my CVS and as it turns out, this doctor was with my prior OB whom I loved but is now the head up at Yale Medical School. Out of curiosity, I got their website and found that 3 of my prior doctors are at this office! I was pretty happy because I felt comfort in already knowing and trusting doctors instead of starting off new.

So I pick up the phone, call the office and tell them I want my prenatal care done with them. They then tell me that since I am a patient of one of their referring doctors, I would need a referral letter to switch. To this I responded with the explanation that my current doc no longer does OB and that these doctors were my doctors on my previous pregnancies. Further more my current doctor does not make my decisions for me on whom I will see and does not "own" me. The receptionist proceeds with "those are the rules blah blah blah". I figure, let me play by their rules and get the stupid letter.

I call back my current GYN and leave the message that I need this letter. She then calls me back but I miss the call and leaves the message that it was up to me to go there but she wouldn't write the letter until my CVS results come back! Now I'm pissed because to me, that is not encouraging AND I will be nearly 13 weeks by then! I know there isn't much that goes on in the first trimester with the doctor but I want to be settled into the groove already! Not waiting around for the whims of others.

Am I being really hormonal and irrational? Needless to say I put another call in to her but am awaiting the call back grrr

Hang in there Brenda! Wait for her to call and ask her agin to please write the letter as it is important you feel to have early care. if she still refuses put on your assertive face and say"You have helped me over the years giving me the care i need and im asking you to please provide me again with the care I am REQUESTING, unfortunatly the other office will not bend the rules so will you please jsut help me out here!" Thanks!!

LOL you get the idea!! Goodluck and KUP!!

You need bureaucratic BS like a hole in the head.

Like Kim said, sweet talk a letter out of your doctor and get in to the practice you want.

Your "argument" that you have already been patients of these OBs and should not need a referral (the exact argument I made when I got preggo with my now 3 year old) is totally reasonable and accurate... BUT you don't want to piss off the receptionist at the OB practice... as she is the gatekeeper.

Get the letter out of your existing doctor.

Thanks Kim, Libby, and wewantbabies. I just finished the follow up phone call with my GYN. I told her I didn't see a reason to wait and that I'd appreciate it if she could do the letter now. Within 5 minutes her secretary called to confirm they had faxed the letter. Done:-)

I appreciate your support.

Very good... you get your appointment and the gatekeeper can still feel important. Everyone wins!

I'm so happy that you don't have to go through more of that.

Tes Libby and you cannot imagine how sweet and accommodating she was when she received the fax! It seemed like she was so happy I was becoming a patient. Whatever....

My appointment is on November 20th, the day before my CVS. I hope and pray that day arrives soon and find all is well. I won't really fully attach until then.
