Hi,

I have an ultrasound this Friday, and I will be 9 weeks along. Is there anyway to detect Down's with an ultrsound? My husband and I have have decided against having an Amnio. My latest labs came back great, very high beta, and all levels high. I'm 44, and the doctor was very pleased with my labs. I'm know I not out of the woods yet, as far as miscarriage, but I'm getting closer. I feel terribly, which is a great pregnancy sign.

I had read somewhere on the Internet, that the structure of a fetus's nose can give you a clue to Down's. That Down's babies have less cartlidge than a non Down's.

The only way to conclusively detect Downs is through an amnio or CVS. The CVS is more invasive and a bit more risky than the amnio. I had 3 amnios with my three last pregnancies and the procedure is very safe and painless and can be done as early as 15 weeks. With the amnio fluid they can also do the FISH test which will give you results back for DOwns and other age related chromosome problems as early as 48 hours - so you don't have to wait for 4-6 weeks for the results. The only other test which may show markers for DOwns is the Level 2 ultrasound but again, this is only done at around 18 weeks and is not always accurate. One marker is the nucheal fold but if I had positive markers I would NOT make a decision to terminate based on this without doing an amnio. I do wish there was a definitive alternative to amnio but ..... Why are you deciding NOT to do an amnio? ~ Pat

Pat,

We decided not to do the Amnio due to the 1% risk of miscarriage. We will not terminate for any reason.

I had my ultrasound today, because I spotted, brown blood (little), it stopped right away, but also because of the twitches I was feeling in my uterus. I'm 8 weeks along, however the fetus is 6 weeks old, and is doing fine. I saw the fluttering in the sac, and it was quit active. However, I have a fibroid that is as big as a honey dew melon. It is located on the outside wall of the uterus and back. My OB was not concerned with my uteran twitches, as he said this is probably caused by my fibroid. I knew I had a fibroid before I got pregnant, however my OB did not want to remove it, as he felt it would cause more fertility problems. The fibroid is a great distance from the fetus.

I was just hoping there would be a less invasive technique to determine Down's these days. It's good to hear that you were Down's free on all your pregnancies.

Thanks for your response. Susan
