Blood Test Back
10
Tue, 06-08-2004 - 10:53am
Hi,

I called about my blood test. They told me that my HCG is 11. They said they were telling me that I am pregnant, but the numbers are very low. I told them that I wanted to start on progesterone if it was a matter of trying to save the pregnancy and they are going to call me back. My period is due tomorrow. They want to just wait another week and test again. I know there must be things to do. I feel like I am not really pregnant based on what they are saying?

Please tell me what 11 means. I know if it was 5, they would not consider the test positive. I feel really desparate now and need your help more then ever. Please, tell me what to do.

Thank you so much,

Mary

Cathie,

I called and told the nurse I wanted to start the Progesterone. She asked the perinatologist and I started it today. Thank you. The doctor told her to tell me congratulations and that he did not think it would lead to a miscarriage. I remember him always being so positive and me always being unbearably worried.

I agree that I can't wait until next week for a second blood test. They want me to wait until next Thursday. So, I am going to call this Thursday and have another one. If I can get a pregnancy test-Answer-to show positive then I know the numbers have doubled since Monday.

Can you tell me what the Progesterone does and do you think I have started it early enough? I also need to know the true facts of what the worst that can happen is. I deal better with the facts. If you know, please tell me. I want to be positive, but I really need to know the worst that could happen. I don't like feeling in the dark and I hate the wait and see approach.

God bless,

Mary

Cathie,

Also, could you explain late implantation to me. If I had sex on May 24 and my cycle started May 13, that would be day 12. I remember day 25 a tremendous amount of cervical fluid, and the 26 and 27. When could late implantation for me be and would that make sense for an 11 on day 27?

Also, does my morning temp have to continue to increase into the 99 range to maintain a pregnancy if normally I am 97.something. I am still 98. something but does the temp have to increase. What does it mean it it goes down a day then back up?

God bless you for any knowledge you can pass along.

Hi Mary,

Congratulations you are PG!!! Your # is low but +. Did they test your progesterone level? If not I would demand that they do it.

It needs go be over 20 to sustain a pg & if it is lower supplementation is needed. There is no reason to wait.

Let me know what happens.

Hi Lisa,

Thank you! I started taking Progesterone today, but they have not tested me for it. I was also told just to insert one a day-I think that is 25grams or however they measure. Can they test the HCG and the Progesterone at the same time, the same blood work? I was going to ask them to do this Thursday, do you think that is OK to wait until then? The first blood test was Monday which would hopefully show a lot of change.

God bless you!

Hi Mary,

I am really glad you have started the progesterone. Yes, my RE takes 1 tube of blood from me & measures my BHCG, Progesterone, & Estriodal levels. It would be fine to wait until tomorrow as long as you are now already taking the supplement. It sounds like you are taking suppositories & the best time to take those is before bed while you are horizontal for quite some time as they tend to leak out a little so by being horizontal you will get better absorption.

Keep us posted.

Lisa, Cathie, everyone

I called this morning about getting another blood test. The nurse was really trying to let me know that even if the numbers doubled, it would not make me feel better. The only thing that will is to wait until next week to really see a bigger change. I did take a pregnancy test which showed a faint plus and another showed a faint line. Both were 25 HCG. So we feel that the numbers are going up, but for me, I need to see a strong solid pink!

I kept talking with the nurse and then got disconnected. When I called back, I felt a bit more aggressive and told her (in tears) that I am always telling other mothers to be advocates for their babies, I just was trying to do that for mine. She then said, it's already done. Go today, it's in the computer already. She was really compassionate with me, so I just had it done. It was not for progesterone though because everyone is telling me that does not matter. Should I fight for that even though I am already on the progesterone? I have a few hours to call back and have that added.

I have not told anyone yet that I am pregnant. I feel like I am just waited for all this to be over instead of being excited. My husband's grandmother is very sick and he has been called to come see her 8 hours away. I have known her since I was 14, that's when my husband and I met. I really need to tell him what is going on, but I honestly don't know what to say. I just wanted it to be so happy and I am more like the world's fasted rollercoaster ride. It is becoming too much now with her sick

Thanks for being there for me,

Mary

Hi Mary,

Your progesterone must be over 20 to sustain a PG. Many Re's feel that with the supplement it will just BE that high & they don't test but I have found that the better RE's do test because in some cases women do need a more than the average dose. It is a very simple blood test & feel they should just do it.

Hope this helps.

Keep me posted.

Hi Lisa,

I am just responding to what you said about progesterone levels needing to be 20 to sustain a pregnancy. Why is it that 2 OBs that I saw told me that as long as the progesterone levels were above 12 that was OK. Mine hovered between 18 and 20 for the 7 weeks that I was pregnant this last time. The only people who told me that the progesterone needed to be higher than 20 where Dr. Beer's office and by the time I got that information it was too late. Many doctors are very against the supplements. I was told that if my levels were OK (which they said mine were) then I didn't need the supplements. I am a little confused as to the discrepancy. Why so so many doctors think anything below 20 is acceptable and Dr. Beer says no?

Hope all is well with you.
