Can someone give the real scoop on cats?

No pun intended!

Can anyone set me straight here. I have heard so many mixed things about having a cat and it being risky for women trying to get prg. I have a cat but I was tested for toxoplasmosis and it came out negative. Isn't that the test that determines whether there is any danger of losing the fetus? Someone at my office was talking about cats and said "oh women who are trying to get prg should get rid of their cats because they definately cause miscarriages." I have heard so many different things. But I do know women who have cats and who have had healthy babies. What is the consensus out there?

I would be heartbroken if I had to part with my kitty, he is such a sweetheart!

Hi Jadu,

Toxoplasmosis is the danger to PG women and is kitty is negative it should be fine. Also if you have been around pets all your life you may be immune. For extra safety wear gloves and a surgical mask if you have to change the litter box and wash throughly afterward. If you can get someone else to change the box even better!!!

Hi

I also heard what Lisa wrote. And if your cat is a strictly inside cat, there should be little to no risk of Toxoplasmosis.

The woman who said that pregnant women should get rid of their cats obviously is not a cat person... I have two cats that I could never get rid of!! My friend once moved because her condo board decided to enforce the 'no pet' rule and told her to get rid of her cat...
