DHEA -Has anybody taken supplements?

Hi,

I was hoping to find out if anybody has taken DHEA supplements in hope of helping conception. I have read a few places that it can help in dosages of 80 mg or more after 2-4 months of taking in conjunction with fertility meds, ie increasing ovarian output. There was a small study done a few years back but it was only for 2 months and the results were inconclusive, although they saw slight increase in the production of eggs. Then I read an article about a 43 yr old professional woman trying to harvest her own eggs for IVF out of Chicago just this past October were each month she produced more and more and of higher quality each times. She did several rounds of the drugs and by the end they actually had to cut back on the drugs. The story was posted on a few tv station websites and Sciencentral website. I was just wondering has anybody tried this? I have been doing fertility drugs since May starting out with Clomid and moving to high dosages of follistim. I just started taking the DHEA a month ago and this past round of follistim had to be aborted due to my body O before the doctor expected (On it's own without Ovidrel). Something that happens when Ovarian reserve is extremely low. I O'd on day 9 with only one egg at 18, 2 would have been to 18 if my body responded correctly and waited for the Ovidrel. So I don't know if my response would have been better than previous times.

Please let me know if anybody feels they had luck with DHEA.

Thanks,

Lisa

I have been taking DHEA for 2 months = 50 mg. I am currentl 45, have a 2 yr old and want another within the next year. I too, saw the article = and was surprised. I took it to reverse the aging process - and had no idea that it could help you concieve. I can tell you that I notice small changes with my body, but nothing substancial. We will see this month. Good luck! By the way - the woman in Chicago going through IVF was also taking fertility meds - as did I when I went through the process. I had alot of eggs - most were genetically bad.

Thanks Jill,

Yes I was aware that the woman in Chicago was taking fertility meds. I too am taking them since May of this year with a month or 2 off. I started DHEA on 11/3 and then started my next round of injectibles in early Dec. I O'd on my own, which shouldn't have happened and is a bad sign in itself but had I not, I would have had 3 eggs over 18 instead of 1. My body should have been able to hold off with the meds but didn't. However each time before I only had 1 egg. So it seems like it may have improved the outcome a little. I am taking clomid this month (only a minor drug compared to the others) to keep the meds in my system as the IUI would have fallen a very bad time for me this month and clomid is about $900.00 cheaper than the others. Next round my doctor is trying a Lupron flair so that I will not O on my own. I am curious to see how many eggs I will have. Even if they are poor quality the fact that if body responds better will give me hope. They said the real effect shows up after 4 months of use.

As far as taking the DHEA, I have been taking 75 mg (close to the 80 mg the lady was taking). All I have noticed thus far is oily facial skin and my hair is slightly greasy at the end of the day which isn't such a bad result as my skin and hair get so dry this time of year normally.

Well I guess only time will tell. Let me know how things work for you!

Hi Ladies,

I really wish you well and hope you get PG and have a happy and healthy baby.

Can you tell me what DHEA is and some info on it? If it will help I will try it. I am on CC#2 of Clomid 50MG 4-8 and I did O last month but don't know how the eggs were. I would appreciate any imformation.

Thank you!

Hi Dawn,

First let me caution you that my RE knows I am taking it but he said to take it at the recommended dosage of 25mg. He said he can't see how it can have any effect but it couldn't hurt to take it a low dosages. It is something you can buy at your local GNC. That being said here is a definition I copied:

DHEA, i.e., dehydroepiandrosterone, is a natural steroid hormone produced from cholesterol by the adrenal glands. DHEA is chemically similar to testosterone and estrogen and is easily converted into those hormones. DHEA production peaks in early adulthood and declines in production with age in both men and women. Thus, many diseases which correlate with age also correlate with low levels of DHEA production. Advocates of DHEA recommend it to prevent the effects of aging. There has been no scientific evidence, however, that low levels of DHEA is a significant causal factor in the development of diseases associated with aging. Nor is there any evidence that increasing DHEA slows down, stops, or reverses the aging process.

I did some research on DHEA and I have heard that people feel it has helped with a whole range of things including depression, weight loss and even fertility. When I did my research I found a few sites that talked about a woman who took it while on fertility meds. If you go to Sciencentral.com and search DHEA you will find an article on "New Fertility Boost". It said that a woman out of New York had luck although I researched in a few other spots (on tv station websites) and some said Chicago, however it also said that these Reproductive Specialists had offices in both New York and Chicago.

I also found that a study was done a few years back but only for a couple months and the results weren't anything to document.

I hope this helps. I have been taking it for nearly 2 months now, who knows what it has done for sure. I have noticed some slight changes in my body. I do need to caution you that they don't know what the long term effects of this is. I am taking this realizing I might be doing some harm in the long run in unforseen areas. However I am desperate and willing to try anything.

I hope this helps. Good luck to you.
