I have been reading that the herb Vitex is good for regulating periods, PMS and even improving ovulation naturally. Has anyone else ever heard of this or tried this? In the book they said it is like a natural form of Clomid.

I have been using Vitex for several months and I think it has done wonders to regulate my cycle, improve my ovulation and balance my hormones.

However, it is a powerful herb and you must be careful with it. I found too much and I didn't ovulate till very late. Others have found it messes up their cycles completely.

Thanks for your reply. How much Vitex is too much? I bought some liquid drops from Whole Foods and I've been doing about 30 drops 3-4 times a day. Which is what the directions say to do. How much were you using? I certainly don't want to make things worse!! What brand did you use and how much, if you don't mind me asking. I bought the GAIA Herbs brand Vitex in a little dropper type bottle.

I am 41 and am having some symptoms the week before my period of interrupted sleep and sweating. This is really worrying me that I won't be able to keep a pregnancy if I even achieve one. My DH just had a vasectomy reversals so we will be trying soon and I just wanted to help my chances if I can.

Also, how long before you saw results?

Thanks for you input.

Hi There,

I just wanted to let you know that I have had intermittent sweating for several years now and there are many other women who have had those symptoms too. That does not mean you are going into menopause. There could be many reasons for the sweating. With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome that is one symptom(that is what I have), but also these are perimenopausal symptoms as well. From everything I have read and heard from doctors, a woman could have perimenopausal symptoms starting in her 30's and might not reach menopause until her 50's, so whatever you do do not worry about it.

What you need to do is get your hormone levels tested on CD3 (the third day of your cycle). They test FSH levels and also estrogen and progesterone levels. The most important test to reveal what your ovarian reserve is is the FSH test which ideally they say should be below 10 to be able to conceive, (however there are many women who have conceived with much higher levels too).

Also regarding vitex, my advice is that since herbs are very powerful (in fact vitex is considered natures clomid), I would get myself to a naturapath/herbalist/acupuncturist or someone who can do bloodwork (have the bloodwork done on CD3 so that you can see those imp hormone numbers) and who will recommend the best dosage of vitex for you.

Everyone is diff. so diff dosages don't work for the same person.

Now, keep in mind that everyone giving their opinion here is just giving their 2 cents. None of us are doctors here (at least that I know of yet!!). We can just tell you what has worked or not worked for us.

Anyway, I wish you all the best in your quests for another baby!

How much is too much depends on you and your body. I won't be able to tell you how much is right for you. I played around with dosages and found 2 capsules of 400mg is enough for me. More than that, and it delays my ovulation. Other women use much more than me, or much less than me. I guess it all depends on where your body is when you start and how you assimilate the herbs.

I noticed a diference right away the first cycle, but so far I haven't had a successful pregnancy. I am taking a lot of other herbs and vitamins though, so couldn't tell you that any one of them made the difference...

O.K. Thanks for this information. I have contacted an acupuncturist in my area and am thinking of going to her to get these tests done. I have heard that many people have good results with acupuncture as far as with PMS, cycle regulating, and ovulation and pregnancy. I wish more MD's would look at how natural remedies work.

Anyway, I agree I should check my hormone levels out before taking something that I may not need, or may be taking too much, or not enough.

Thanks again!

Catherine: Thanks for your reply. I'm going to get checked out by an acupunturist to check my hormone levels, etc.

Thanks for your reply and thoughts on this.
