HELP! Analysis Paralysis - Need Guidance

I'm new to this board for a reason -- my husband and I just made the decision last month to try for a baby after 11 years of marriage. My first pregnancy was a surprise at the age of 27, so I've never done pregnancy planning, charting, etc.

I don't want to BD every day because my husband is 54 yrs old. The fact of the matter is that sperm count is not as high for middle-aged males, so we need to do the every-other-day BD. This means timing needs to be impeccable.

Having said that, here is where I stand at this point in my cycle, and I don't know which signs to trust in terms of when to start BDing. Would love to hear your input:

9/24: CD11

Assuming a 29-day cycle but I'm not 100% sure of that since this is my first month charting.

  • FF says my predicted fertile days are CDs 12, 13 & 14 (9/25, 9/26 with high fertility on 9/27.)

  • O predicted on CD15 (9/28).

    Observations:

  • I had thin, watery but very stretchy CM on CD10 (9/23) but none that noticeable today, CD11. I could go so far as to call it egg white. Hadn't seen any CM prior to that.

  • My OPKs showed no line until today, but the control line is darker, so it's considered negative for the LH surge.

  • I started experiencing tender breasts on CD10.

So the $60,000 question is, when do we start BDing, keeping in mind that we need to accommodate an every-other-day schedule? I'm scared I'm going to miss my window because I'm relying too heavily on the OPK. TIA!

    Melissa:

I'm trying to channel Libby here so bear with me...

The best days to bd are -2 and -1 (2 and 1 days before ovulation) bding on "O" is fun but research says it's not as affective.

Sounds like you had fertile CM on CD10 so you need to hop on it (no pun intended).

I also agree that you should get to it! Every other day should not only make sure that there is enough sperm there, but also that it is fresh. The 'research' shows that if you abstain ahead of time, the quality goes down because it isn't fresh enough. The research for every day versus every other day seems to be pretty unreliable, so you do pretty much what works for you. But, it is better to start too early than too late for obvious reasons. The sperm should last for a few days anyway, anywhere from 3 to 7 days. Hope all goes well for you, have fun!

You guys are so great. Thank you! I'm not sure if we missed the window or not. We'll see. I think I O'd even though OPK has been consistently negative with 2 tests per day.

My two cents is, do those OPK suckers twice a day! This was my first month of trying them (after 6 cycles of charting BBT) and on the day I got a positive, around 7pm, the line was *almost* as dark as the test line, darker than the example in the box's booklet but still not the as-dark-or-darker that it said it should be; I did it again at midnight, and sure enough the line was darker than the control! So we, uh, hopped to it! :D

    HTH!

Thanks for your input, Rebekkah. I did do them twice per day -- once in mid afternoon and once around 8pm. The control line has always been WAY darker. In fact, I could barely see a hint of the test line. I'll try it again today -- twice -- once late in afternoon and once at later at night.

I have a feeling I've already O'd even tho I didn't see an LH surge. If you don't get an LH surge, does it mean that you didn't -- or aren't -- going to ovulate?

This is so complicated to me!! Grr!

technically, no, if you don't get that surge, you aren't going to ovulate, BUT I don't really completely trust those tests, you know what I mean? You could have like a short-lived surge one month and miss it... It is a TON of info to process, I know, all this TTC stuff.

this seems like good advice: http://www.pregnancyloss.info/sperm_meets_egg_plan.htm

Thank you so much for that link, Rebekkah. I'm going to go with that KISS (Keep it Simple, Silly!) plan next month if we didn't conceive this month. I've driven myself crazy with all the charting, predictions vs. physical signs, etc.

    I appreciate your guidance.
