Can I ask why you don't want to use herbs? They are so effective and many are hesitant but combined with acu will give one the greatest results. Needles are placed on certain areas f your body according to your condition and also based on where you are in your cycle.
So you might get needled in your ear, on your abdomen, legs, hands, arms , toes, feet, etc; it's all individual (I am an acu although I am not trained in fertility acupuncture).

About me: A pixie in the city, 41, TTC#1 since May 2010, married 18 years.
Diagnosed with/surgically removed endometrioma Aug 2010. Sept IUI #1=BFN. Nov IUI #2=BFN. Uterine polyp removed Jan. 2011. Jan 2011 IVF cancelled. No response. 2nd
Japanese needling techniques are lighter, the needles are thinner and they go in more shallow- you don't feel a thing. I prefer traditional Chinese style and for that reason my personal acu are almost always from China (even Westerner's taught TCM both style usually prefer to use Jap needling techniques because so many are squeamish) I just like to *feel* qi moving with needling- that's not to say Jap technique not effective, my old acu didn't even use needles - he placed them in his had and would proceed to insert them without ever piercing my flesh but that's another whole school of TCM altogether.

i have had lots of acupuncture in the past for my back and neck issues, but never anything for fertility. Still being a bit new to getting really active about holistic fertility (as opposed to trying the old fashioned way for the last 2 1/2 years), I have just started seeing an RE, and getting all the associated fertility testing, and Friday I have my first appt with a fertility acupuncturist.
I've had needles in just about every part of my body aside from my pelvis, but I fully expect that my energy level in that "chakra" will be depleted (sounds really official, right... I just made that up! :o). I understand that part of the benefit is physiological, whereas the needles create increased blood flow to the area which in turn assists in carrying away toxins and improving the body's response to whatever may be imbalanced in the area.
I've never experienced pain from needles except those placed in the soft part of my hands at the crease of the thumb. I actually find it very relaxing. It's kindof nice to have the salon style attention and calm. If you find that you're in a cold room with bright lights - find a new acu!
I'm totally excited about seeing the acu on Friday. Let me know what you think when you go!
