Pregnancy chances

My first time to post to this board. Does anyone know what the percentage is for conception after 40? I'm 42. I delivered my first and only baby last December stillborn due to Trisomy 18. After almost a year, I'm still not pg again. I know all the chances for a healthy baby, but not for actually conceiving at my age. I'm considering IVF only to have the advantage of checking for abnormalities before pregnancy, but now I'm thinking I may actually need it to get pg. Any thoughts or answers anyone?

Sorry to hear about your loss. I pray that you will be pg soon.

I have read that for women turning 40, it is a 50% chance of miscarriage as opposed to 20% chance for a woman in her 20's. So, the odds are that your next pg, you will carry to term.

I have read that stress can really inhibit conception. I got my hormones checked out once I decided to TTC#2 so that if the news came back positive, I would feel less stressed. If the news didn't come back positive, I would explore other means than natural conception to have a child. It is best to be knowledgable about your fertility once you are over 40. An RE once told me (wonder how true it is), that once a woman reaches 43, odds that IVF will work are not high. That is why he stressed that a woman who is 42 and tests not great hormonally should consider IVF right away.

Good luck

I started going to an Re at 45 1/2. I had 2 iui's done, unsuccessful. My re said he would continue iui's with me because ther was a chance, but he said He would not do IVF that the chances were not any greater, unless I used donor eggs..Well I got pregnant naturally during a rest cycle because of a cyst. So as far as the chances for women over 40, I concieved and delivered a healthy boy at 43, and am currently 9 1/2 weeks pregnant. I will be 46 on Friday, and both were concieved naturally. So keep your chin up, you never know what can happen. Good luck to you.
