Prolactin

Hi there~

I just got back my 3 day tests and everything was fine except my prolactin levels. They should be 20 or under, and mine were 33. Apparently high prolactin can be caused by just about anything -- even nipple stimulation!!!!! And although my levels aren't dangerously high, they could still prevent me from ovulating, and impact my ability to implant.

Does anyone know, is high prolactin age-related? Has anyone out there had this issue? Would love to hear about your experiences.

Thanks!

Hi -
I had a prolactin level reading of 40 and then did a fasting test that brought it down to 30. I don't know if it is an age-related thing or not. The doctor prescribed parlodel to help reduce the prolactin level. I haven't started taking it yet -- a little nervous about the potential side effects. Did they prescribe anything for you? Has anyone taken parlodel for this purpose?

Thanks,
S

I just had my prolactin retested today, but no one told me to fast (although I did go first thing in the morning and didn't have breakfast). I guess I'll know tomorrow if it's still high, and, if so, what medication I'll be taking to bring it down. the only side effects I've heard about are dizziness and trouble sitting up from lying down positions.

I wonder if my RE will do the IUI is my Prolactin is still high?

The fasting was for 8 hours, so you are probably going to get a fasting result anyway. Good luck. I'd be interested in what your RE prescribes. I've read the main side effects of parlodel are dizziness, nausea, but I think what spooked me out was that they prescribe this for Parkinson's patients as well. Not sure why that bothers me, but it did take me a back.

I didn't get any indication that they would not do the IUI and continue with the Clomid cycle while my prolactin level is high or while taking parlodel.

Just got my prolactin retest back and it was.....9. Pretty big difference from 33, and my doctor can't explain it except that perhaps he will retest me later on. For now, no (more) drugs. Just had my IUI. So weird to be there in the room with the doctor and my husband trying to make a baby. But nothing as weird as this cervical cap I have to keep inside me for the next several hours. Feels like I have a car parked inside my cervix. Yuck!

Congrats on your retest -- that's a good sign. And, I agree it is a wierd concept the whole clinical part of making a baby -- but, hey, if it works, who cares.
I decided to wait on starting the parlodel to see if I am pregnant this time (crossing fingers and toes and all - period is due Wednesday). If not, I'll take the parlodel and start the clomid/ IUI cycle. Why is it sooo hard?

Good luck -- keep me posted.

I saw my accupunturist this morning, and SHE takes the credit for lowering my prolactin. "I told you the Accupunture balance the hormones," she said. Maybe she's right. Or maybe it was that I got tested at two different labs. I'll never know. I'm just glad the numbers are as they are.

S, maybe you should try accupunture and see if your level goes down. It would be an interesting little test...

Funny you should mention that. I have been thinking of acupuncture lately. I have done some energy work (Jin Shin), which I believe has helped me generally. But, maybe I will look into acupuncture more seriously. Thanks.

If you go ahead with the needles, let me know how it works out. I had only three sessions before taking the retest, so I can't logically imagine that it had that much influence. That said, you never know. Our two cases certainly wouldn't comprise a clinical study, but if your results ended up like mine, it sure would be interesting.

Hey JWP,

I did decide to do the needles and herbs :). Somehow that seemed more holistic than taking the parlodel. But, then again here I am taking clomid and doing IUI, so go figure my logic?! I get another blood test in a few weeks, so I'll let you know.

Hope all is well with you.

S: What kind of herbs? Did your accupuncturist give them to you, or did you find/buy them on your own. I didn't do any herbs, but do wonder about them. I'm also interested to hear about your test. Let me know.
