Question about OPT's
Tue, 08-03-2004 - 10:03am
Hi -

I am using OPT's for the first time this cycle and I'm confused. Up until yesterday the test line was significantly lighter than the reference line. Yesterday the test line was ALMOST as dark as the reference line. Today it is significantly lighter again.

I'm confused!!! I would have thought that the line would get darker as I got close to O. I thought today would be the day. Did I miss it?? Or does it fluctuate?? I am using the Clear Plan tests and have been testing first thing in the AM.

Can anybody with some experience using these give me their insight??

I'm new too, but I thought that you were not supposed to test first thing in the am, that you were supposed to test around 2pm and you should not pee for a while before hand so it will be concentrated. The test instructions say you can test any time of the day but I read that LH doesn't start processing until the am, and that is why it's best to wait until the afternoon to test. (But if you buy the Clear Blue Easy Fertility monitor it tells you to test in the am, but it measures more than just your LH level.)

Good Luck,

I'm probably the last person to give advice about this since they only really worked for me once.

But according to the test instructions I have - you're not supposed to take it until the afternoon (suggested between 2-8pm) and try to take it at the same time each day and limit fluid intake up to 2 hours prior to the test.

The first month I did this, it worked beautifully - faint line one day, really dark line the next day and the following day I ovulated. (no pregnancy mind you) Ever since then, work has been so crazy I haven't been able to test at a regular time and every day so this will probably be my last month using them.

Besides the fact that I get faint lines and then surge day....which could mean I'm not ovulating....but that just doesn't makes sense since I still have ovualtion pain.....but I suppose I could be one of those strange women who gets the pain but releases no eggs....who knows. I'll find out soon enough.

Anyway - hang in there.....

Thanks everyone for your input.

I realize that most tests say to take it in the afternoon. My RE recommended using the Clear Plan/Blue test because it can be done in the AM. There was NO WAY I was going to be able to "hold it" for 4 hours without peeing. My only hope was to do it in the AM. I have trouble getting through the night without going several times.

I just called my DH and told him to "be ready" tonight - just in case :)

Still I wonder has anyone who has used these seen the line get darker (but not dark enough), get lighter and then dark again (at O time), during one cycle?? Maybe since I am using it in the AM I never will get as dark as the reference line. I'll have to give my RE a call.

Thanks again,

When I first started using OPKs, I used them mid-afternoon as recommended. I never got a second line - not even a faint one. It was suggested that I try testing twice a day to see if I could catch the surge. Doing this, I discovered I could get a second line with FMU - contrary to the instructions. Since I am up in the night at least a couple times to pee, I think this might make the difference.

Anyhow, I have still never gotten a really dark 2nd line. I get a few days of light lines, one day of a darker line and then a day or two of light lines. That's it. Since it matches with my temp rise, I know that the darker line day is the day before I ovulate.

Hope that helps!

That does help - thanks. Sounds to me like Monday AM I saw my surge. BD on Saturday and Tuesday so my timing wasn't the best but there is always hope!

Guess that puts me in the 2WW. Anyone else??

Hi, I'm new at using these OPT's also I had a very dark second line yesterday when I tested and that was the first time i've seen one. We've been ttc#2 since Jan/04 and I really feel hopefull this month actually I feel hopefull every month til AF comes. I had some bad cramping last night that woke me up so i'm taking that as another good sign. I had my first child at 41 with no assistance at all but now at 43 I'll take all the help I can get. Thanks for listening, Robin
