Semen Analysis Results

Sorry I haven't written much lately. Work is insanely busy suddenly. I will come back and post more tonight on other threads. Just wanted to do a quick update:

DH had his semen analysis today. I rec'd a basic feedback from the Dr via email and will go in for more in-depth discussion and consultation at a later date (TBD). I am afraid to tell DH:

here is a portion of the email:

"semen test was normal in terms of motility and concentration but abnormal in terms of strict morphology.
Normal morphology is at least 8%; his was only 4%.
This means a higher than normal percentage of his sperm have an abnormal shape and this tendds to correlate with an inability of the sperm to get into the egg preventing fertilization."

Now what?? Does this mean IVF won't even work??????
Trying not to freak out.

no, IVF is still in the picture. They can do some sort of procedure now where they go to the cellular level and put one single sperm in. ICSI or something like that. Sounds like, if you go that route, they will know to do that.

More information = more chance of overcoming your trouble ttc.

IUI is also very helpful with that as well I believe. It weeds out the lazy sperm. Do you have a call in to your RE to discuss?

Thanks you guys. We will schedule our appt with the Dr. soon--I just need to contact DH. I am dreading telling him this because he is already a hypochondriac and hearing this will send him into a flurry of Google madness.

Jeanne, his motility is fine---they swim fast. :) But they are an abnormal shape so they can't penetrate the egg.

Well I guess we will see what the Dr. says. Sigh.

How in the hell do you tell your DH his sperm are effed up? I can't protect him from bad news. This is bumming me out to think how he will react. This is just gonna freak him out completely.

IUI will still be an option and a good one at that.

Dianne, it's not so bad. As PPs have said, ICSI with IVF selects the really good-looking sperm. We did it with our first two IVFs and will do it again with the third. Not sure about IUIs but your RE will be able to tell you. If DH freaks, he freaks. He will recover!

In IUI procedures, they spin the boys to weed out the poor performers and only put back the um, "cream" of the crop.

Thanks all of you amazing ladies for your responses and support.

Honestly, I think I am the one that is freaked out more than him--at the entire idea of IVF with ICSI. It just seems like such a stressful experience emotionally AND physically. And we both suffer from anxiety issues as it is...

It is just a lot for two fairly immature-for-their age newlyweds to be going for. We haven't even been married a year yet. I guess I was hoping our marriage (and the two of us) could have a little more time to mature, but that is not the case. I wonder if I could be happy with dogs and a career instead. :(

I haven't read any real-life stories of IVF being a joyful and exciting process, it just seems scary and freaky and worrisome. And then there is the risk of miscarriage and all that. It seems like IVF takes a few tries. I may be wrong though on all of this so please, correct me if I'm wrong!

For me it would be the financial anxiety of IVF.
