A lot of us are taking various fertility drugs, supplements, herbs, potions, etc. in an effort to get that BFP. So tell us -- what are you on? :) If you'd like, please explain what the substances are intended to do.

Me: prenatal vitamins, baby aspirin and Folgard (megadose of folic acid plus B vitamins). The latter two are to prevent clotting -- I'm compound heterozygous for the MTHFR gene mutation, which might cause coagulation problems in pregnancy.

Susan:

I was on Clomid, and it worked for me. Clomid adjusts the various hormones related to fertility (FSH, LH and Progesterone especially), and generally speaking puts your best biochemical foot forward. It also is said to send out better quality eggs when it is kicked in. They do not know precisely how it works, only that it does.

Clomid is most effective at the 3-4 cycle mark and that is the time frame when I conceived... after 14 months before of no Clomid.

It has drawbacks. It will eventually thin your uterine lining. This is why you are not supposed to take it beyond 6 months in a row. It causes headaches on the days you take it and mild acne and other side-effects.

It should not be taken unless under the care of a specialist. GPs will likely not prescribe it, and it they do... they shouldn't.

Clomid has the added bonus of elevating your progesterone post OVL. Progesterone levels in the 14 days past OVL (ie. the days before you even know you are pregnant) are critical to a viable pregnancy. If you have a low level then - any pregnancy achieved is in jeopardy of miscarriage. Thus, Clomid fills several important roles in some women.

Susan, for some reason the title of this thread just cracked me up because I have often asked DH the same thing when he is acting goofy!

Ha, Ruth, glad you laughed -- I often ask myself what I'm on as I contemplate becoming a mom at my age! ;)

I will look into this maca stuff. I've heard enough unpleasant things about DHEA to scare me off it, though I do recall that some women here had really good luck with it.

Libby, my RE thinks Clomid is ineffective after 40 -- I should show him a pic of Sawyer!

Tell him that I totally beg to differ. Apart from over 40 yr olds, who else might have misaligned fertility hormones?!?

My RE was also not forthcoming and I had to press her to prescribe. Once she kind "heard me" that I wanted (read: "was going to") to try it - she had no problem doing so and taking the credit for my pregnancy!

If I'm not PG by the end of the summer I will probably be on some kind of script, but for now, it's this:
