Acupuncture or Clomid?

Trying to decide between Acupuncture and Clomid to get pregnant. I am 40, have one daughter (conceived at first try when I was 35). I have some medical issues (PMDD-taking LOW doses of Effexor and Wellbutrin; reherniation of lower back disc-surgery was one year ago-now on 6day steroid pack and anti-inflammatory meds). Would like to hear from anyone 39+ who has had one or more kids naturally but is trying to get pregnant again or has gotten pregnant with acupuncture and/or Clomid. Thanks!

Hello. I had my third daughter last August at 41 and am in the process of trying again. I guess the first question that popped into my head, is why not both? Has your dr. recommended Clomid to you or is it something you are just contemplating?

Personally, I would start the acupuncture and if your dr. suggested Clomid, give that a 3 month run. If you want to do something more natural, soy isoflavones taken as you would Clomid, has much of the same effect-it is what I used when I conceived my daughter.

I agree with Lesa - why not both.

Thank you both for your input and sharing your experience. I really appreciate it. My Ob prescribed Clomid. The only reaason I am hesitant to take it is that I would prefer not to add any meds to my system.

In the last two years I have been through two surgeries (lower back and wrist/severe CT), taken related pain management meds (minimal but still) + cortisone/steroid injections + oral steroid packs. Plus I take Wellbutrin and Effexor daily to manage my PMDD. I feel like my body is out of balance.

My fear is it will be one thing after another that 'requires' medication. My wish is to be off all meds. I realize it may not be possible and I FULLY appreciate modern medicine. But how many pills will I taking by the time I am 60 or 70? I have discovered I am super sensitive when it comes to drugs for example can no longer take Sudafed (OTC) due to interactions between it and Effexor.

I guess I will just have to decide if I am willing to give acupuncture alone try, realizing it may not work OR try acupuncture and Clomid together. Thanks for helping me see 'shades of gray'...Again, I really appreciate your input.

If you feel your body is out of balance because of all the meds than accupuncture could definately help.

I tried acupuncture to help my back before opting for surgery in 2008. I, too, felt so much better after treatment! It did not help my back due to the severity of the herniation but it did make me a believer. My acupuncturist actually told me her mother also had to have back surgery and that acupuncture does not always work. I am looking forward to going to see her again. It is nice to know she has an open mind.

What is BFP? I am new to the board and TTC and baffled my the number of acronyms...

I'll second what was said about going to someone who's got a degree in TCM. I'll also add that I think doing both acupuncture and Clomid can't hurt, either.

Although I didn't become pregnant while doing acupuncture, my stress level dropped dramatically. I went once a week for nine months and during that time, I finally got off anti-depressants and haven't taken them since (that was spring 2007). I've had my "down" moments, but not enough that I want to risk my health (or take a chance w/ birth defects) by getting back on SSRI's.

GL and let us know what you decide! =)
