Kate:

Welcome, so you're young - big deal - you're in search of that golden egg like the rest of us.

If you search the threads in this group you'll probably come up with gobs of information on DHEA.

Hi Kate, a few quick comments (I'm running late for work) :D

Most of us here are taking it because we're over 40. With that said it is known to help IVF patients. Go to our FAQ Reference, click to see more threads, we have lots of posts on it over the last year. Several of our bfps were taking DHEA.

Whole foods will most likely have a better brand, but not sure. I know Brenda from our board bought hers there, pharmaceutical brand or micronized if you can find it. It's not very expensive so you go that.

Will give you some pimples at first, some oily skin. That went away. Start at 25 mg for a week or 2 and bump to 50. That is my recommendation just so you can ease into it.

On the doctor, there are some doctors who know nothing of it, some that are totally on board, some that are just "whatever". My doc said my insurance wouldn't pay for dhea test so I bought a home kit and I was low, out of range (normal for us 40's).

On the how long, I believe it is 60-90 days to get full effects BUT we have had BFPs from some who were on it just 1 month.

I have been taking since October, but have also had weird cycles from coming off BCP. I'm still holding out that it will help me get a bfp!!!

GOOD LUCK hope this helps, like I said lots of threads on here.

If you go down to the FAQ / REFERENCE section, I just bumped a great CBS news clip on DHEA that you should see, especially if you're doing IVF.

What is micronized? How is that different than the stuff you get at GNC?

I think micronized means that the particles are smaller and so more easily absorbed, but I could be wrong. I think the term "pharmaceutical grade" means that it's purer.

I've started taking a low dose--only 20 mg per day. So far not many side effects--slightly oilier skin with a few extra pimples. My skin feels softer. I've only been taking it a couple of weeks so no success stories to report yet.

HI Ladies, thanks so much for all of your replies- very helpful!
I just bought the OTC kind from GNC...25mg/pill. Is that kind OK? I am sometimes leary about things from GNC...don't know why. My RE told me that people usually take 75mg/day, but from what I'm reading on this board, its best to start out w/ 25mg/day and ease yourself in to it?
Thanks for all of the info!

~Kate

I personally think starting at 25/mg for a few days, maybe bumping up to 25 am & pm to start. There are just so many variables on this because some people have had absolutely no side effects (besides a little acne) and others had issues with it making them feel edgy; it seems to me that easing in would allow you the chance to make sure you're not the type that is ultra sensitive to it; and I can't imagine GNC is any better/worse than any of the brands we're all taking.
