Egg Donor Article

Thought this might be of interest to some. We just began our quest for an egg donor. I found one that I really like online but the administration (finders) fee for the online site is $6500...then you have to pay the donor honorarium (at least 5K) ...so we're already up to $11,500 THEN we have to pay for her meds, my meds and both of our procedures....... it is really giving us a lot to think about as to how far we will go and how much $$$ we will spend in our quest for our baby......we found a place locally that is MUCH more reasonable ( by about 10K)....it might not have as many donors to choose from though. That is where we are going to have to weigh our priorities. I would like to think that if we do DE and it doesn't work, we might have some extra $$ left over to adopt......decisions, decisions---and of course LOTS of prayer !!!!!

Hi Songbird 1012!
My DH and I have been through all (if not, then at least it feels like it) of the fertility stuff, and have been where you are now. We originally chose a donor from an agency because she looked like she could have been my sister, but even though she was a proven donor and only 24, the embryos from her eggs disintegrated in the laboratory. It was horribly sad. We then met with the coordinator at our doctor's office, and she was so helpful. She was able to tell us which donors were kind, and bright, and reminded her most of us. We had a tiny pool to choose from (2) in the end, as we are both blonde and blue eyed, and wanted our child to be so too (my Mom is a geneticist, and we want to keep our options open as far as what we tell...). We ended up choosing the one who actually didn't look like us as much, and didn't have as high of an education, but had a wonderful outlook on life, and had donated 3 times at that clinic and all three women had become pregnant and now have beautiful babies. I guess we figured that we really really want a baby, have spent a lot of money and don't have much more, and that the next step (adoption) would give us a lot less ability to chose. At any rate, know that I'll be thinking of you through this roller coaster ride, and talk to the coordinator at your doctor's office. You may find someone on those pages who suits you fine and you can save that money for the carseat! Best of luck! And, my pregnancy test was positive today!!!!!

WOW ! Congrats to you on your BFP !!!! That is awesome news ! I also thank you for sharing your story w/ me. We have already spent over 30k on IVFs...not even counting the 5 IUIs done to get to that point. I have pretty much decided that we just can't afford another 30K for DE. The other thing that bothers me is that on these girls profiles it says that they want to help couples w/ IF have a baby....and don't get me wrong, i do not begrudge them their fee for their willingness to help. However, what I do wonder is if they know how much the agency is charging couples for the "administrative fee". Many of us have already spent oodles of $$ trying procedures on our own......now the agency wants to charge as much as $6500 ? That's crazy if you ask me ! I'd rather that all the money goes to the donor.

In my other e-mail I think I mentioned I found a place w/ a much better price. I am going to take your advice and perhaps change my perspective in looking for a donor. Please stay in touch and let us know how your pg goes ! I'm so excited for you ! Congrats again !!!!

Congratulation on your BFP!!!! What wonderful news! You must be so happy.

I read that donor egg article a while ago, too. My niece had offered to donate an egg to us, but I don't want her to. Why? Because there are dangers involved for women who donate. If something goes wrong in the procedure, she could become infertile--and while I want a baby desperately, I don't want one at the expense of my niece who isn't yet married and has no children of her own. I wonder if they explain this to the young women who donate. I hope they do, so they know what risks (however minimal) they are undertaking.

Anyhow, congrats again!!!

xxoo
