Hi, New Here: What is the First Step?

Hello,

I'm 43 years old. My partner is 48 and had a vasectomy 5 year ago. I know seeing a fertility specialist would be the first step (I spoke to my doctor). What is usually done first by a fertility specialist? What do my partner and I do? I just want to get some preliminary information.

Thanks,

Bunny

My DH had a VR, and it is successful. For me, I had CD 3 blood work...checked my FSH and Inhibin B. Later did a FSH LH and E2. Currently TTC on round 2 of Clomid.

Good luck.

Wishing you lots of luck.....

first off get DH taken care of with a VR and go from there. If that's done then go to your RE for testing.....CD3 FSH, Clomid Challenge, Antral Follie Count...there are a bunch that you'll have done to get an idea.

Make sure you like your RE and staff...if not then go elsewhere. A great book to get for about 10 bucks on Amazon.com is "How to get pregnant" b y Sherman Silber....explains a TON of stuff. Special section for us "old chicks" too.

good luck and Keep us posted !

Here's a question from an outsider, VR-wise.

I'd probably do the easy BW stuff to see what her levels are before making him go through the VR which I heard is not a comfortable procedure...... just my opinion.

Any suggestions out there Atlanta area?

Hello Bunny! Congratulations on deciding to TTC. You could schedule the VR for your DH but I would recommend that you get your fertility checked first before your DH goes through the VR. What you need to do is get some basic fertility testing done. On CD3 you need an FSH, E2, LH and progesterone test. IT would also be advisable to get your prolactin, TSH T5 and T4 checked as thyroid issues can pose fertility problems. YOu might also want to get an HSG to ensure that your tubes are clear. If you have not been charting your cycles you may want to consider this. This will reassure you that you are ovulating and allow you to learn more about your cycle and when you ovulate. You will find that your ovulation days do shift from cycle to cycle. It will take about 3 months after the VR before your DH can be tested for fertility. In the meantime there are lots of things he can do to help improve his fertility such as supplementing with zinc, L-carnitine and antioxidants. You can also, in that time frame improve your fertility through vitamins and supplements such as selenium, folic acid and vitamins E and C. Best of luck!!

Thanks, Pat and everyone,

I am taking care of myself. One thing I read about in the newspaper this morning is the "procreation vacation" at a resort that caters to people who are trying to conceive. So, I could add that to all the advice on here :)
