How old do you think is too old to have a baby? My mother in law had my husband at 49. He was a BIG surprise. She is a very healthy woman and is still around for her grandkids. I was thinking about it but I am afraid of what people would think. I haven't started the big "M" yet and I know I can't wait too long. I would love to hear from anyone out there.

I think it really depends on the person.

From a medical standpoint, most US clinics won't treat a woman past a certain age. For some it's 45, for others it can go older. Their reasoning is that they want to make sure the mother won't have too many complications and they want a good chance that the parents will be around until the child reaches 18.

Other than that, it's really a matter of whether or not the parents feel like they can handle a child at that age. A lot of "older" folks make wonderful parents. They have a lot of experience, know how to organize and handle the stresses of parenthood. Other folks would have a harder time for a variety of reasons.

I know a woman who is a twin and who was born when her mother was 44 (definitely not as impressive as 49). In that case too grandma was still around for grandchildren.

Funny, no one seems to ask that question about fathers.

I say go for it.

Just wanted to share my story. My husband had a Vasectomy reversal when I was 40 and 1/2. I conceived when i was 42 and delivered a beautiful baby boy when I was 43. We didn't use any birth control after him. I conceived again at 45 but sadly miscarried at 6 weeks. 3 months later, 1 week before my 46th Birthday I conceived again and I am now 30 weeks pregnant with a healthy baby Girl. The pregnancy has been uneventful so far, Thank God. I was really nervous in the beginning but I know this is God's work and I trust him.

Good Luck to all!!!

Hi ladies,

Traditional Chinese Medicine says that you can have a baby any time before menopause -- the average age of that being about 54-56. I have a friend whose mom had all of her kids in her 40s, one at 40, one at 42 and one at 46. She is now 84 and thoroughly enjoys her 5 grandchildren.

not a lot of support for that in the 60s, but she did it. My friend's parents were 20 years older than my parents, but my friend never thought twice about it.
