intro and some fertility questions

Hello Ladies

I've been kicking around lurking for a few weeks. I'm 40 and have 5 kids but want to try for number 6.

I've had up and down fertility issues over the last 9 years so the fact that I'm struggling again isn't a shock just a pain in the butt. My oldest is 8 and I needed 1 round of 50mg clomid to conceive him as at the time (age 31) I had luteal phase defect from having had perfect cycles upto age 30 they became too short as soon as tried to conceive. As i assumed my fertility was compromised I pressed straight on, weaned at 8 mths, took vitex and a few other herbs and conceived again but with some progesterone supp's to keep that lining in place.

Took a wee break and had number 3 2 1/2 years later and as with number 2 I conceived first time at age 35. At age 36 I thought I'd give it another go and had some baseline testing done - well my fsh was 15 - so I was told that at age 36 my ovaries were age 43 -- what a shocker. I was told I'd definately need donor eggs and mine were shot to pieces. I decided to rethink having another baby as at the time I didn't want to have donor eggs so took a 6 month break and then thought I'd try on my own - fortunately I conceived first month -when my daughter was 3 months old I weaned, took some herbs and conceived again. My youngest daughter is now 9 months and dispite lots of herbs my cycles are now out of wack. I'm now dealing with a shopping list of issues and am not sure what to do next. Onto the questions:

I've been trying to get everything sorted out with vitex, some EPO, and various tinctures (red clover, raspberry and false unicorn) , B6, prog cream etc but to no sucess:

1. not sure I am having decent ovulation - had a couple of months where my OPK never got above 2 bars (3 bars was ovulating)

I thought false unicorn/vitex would sort this out but not so.

2.Crappy luteal phase - I thought I might have conceived last month but dispite using B6 and some prog cream I just can't seem to have a long enough luteal phase - ovulation was late (day 18 not the usual 13/14)

3. cervical mucous -- well I never had problems before but here I am about to ovulate (well in the next few days) and no ewm.

So I'm not sure what to do -- I thought I might try DHEA but am not sure what parts of the cycle -eggs, mucous, luteal it affects. Or whether I should skip it all and go for a clomid prescription to try and get better ovulation/luteal phase.

I would love anyones input

cheers loads

Hi there, glad to see you posting. I am Lynda and i recently turned 44 (a month ago). I tried to get pregnant for 8 months with no success. i did also try clomid for a couple cycles. when nothing worked, i decided i would try the DHEA. I had read so many positive stories on the stuff. month 2 of taking it, i got pregnant. sadly, i recently miscarried this pregnancy. i am starting again. I take 25mg of micronized DHEA in the morning AND in the evening for a total of 50mg per day. some women start on 25mg and work up to 50 or even 75mg. I felt better taking the DHEA, so i just started at 50mg.

As far as ewcm, i used pre-seed lubricant, which i purchased from ebay. it works well!!! as far as LP Defect, I had a short LP (10 days), but used prescription progesterone supplements from O to AF, which lengthened my LP to 13 to 14 days. You can buy natural progesterone cream at GNC.com, but make sure it's the natural one. There are several kinds. The natural one is usually really expensive. I know some women who have had success using clomid and DHEA.

I hope this helps you. If you need any more help, let me know. I've used vitex, but it made me feel dizzy, so i lessened the dosage. it still made me feel foggy, so i stopped using it. i've heard maca powder is awesome for regulating hormones. i've recently ordered some and just started trying it!! i'll keep ya posted. I'm still spotting from my m/c, but ready to get back on the road to trying to conceive. i wish you your bfp!!!

Hi Jessica and welcome. It sounds like you are doing all the right things to get your cycles back on track. Have you already weaned your DD? if so, how long ago?

You know that every PG and every cycle is different -- maybe you just need more time to get back on to regualr cycles -- it can take up to a year. You are still on the young side, so I don't really think age is the problem.

Have you thought of acupuncture? Chinese herbs (has some of the same crappy-tasting ingredients that Vitex has) may help also.

GL and KUP.

Lynda, I was so sorry to read about your m/c, this is just so devastating. I had no idea (sorry if you posted earlier and I missed it).

Jessica,

I'm so glad you're here!!! I have 5 also (yes I want another also!!) I am sorry, the ladies here know much more about the herbs and the charting--I'm really weak in that department. But I do know how it feels to wake up one morning and decide you want another!

I can tell you I got pg in Nov and lost the healthy baby---due to what I can suspect could only be implantation issues. All else was fine. But I am so motivated to try again, although my dh is woking 1000 miles away this year! I pray a lot. I do also suggest a baby asp/day. I saw a RE in Jan as a follow up with some bw and asked him about all the herbs/dhea/etc. And the only thing he got excited about and gave a definate thumbs up on was the baby asp.

ps--my oldest is 13 and youngest is 4. What do you have ds or dd's?

GL and Welcome

Thanks everyone for being so friendly!

I know I really need to see an RE but being in Paris it just seems so much harder (partly because my french is limited) even finding progesterone cream is proving difficult. I guess in the US I just knew how to find things ! My B6 is in a vit B complex and I'm taking a max dose (of B6) of 200 mg a da and I have a small bit of prog cream left (I ordered some prog suppositries from the UK online but think they won't be here for this cycle). Also I've continued taking vitex and added in some wild Yam NB I'm about 6 or 7 days post ovulation in the hope it might boost my progesterone.

I have DHEA but am not sure if I can start taking it part way through a cycle or whether I need to wait until AF and start on day 1. I did stop breastfeeding 4-5 mths ago so feel I should be back to fertility (or not !!) by now. I'm blindly optimistic that dispite having very little EWCM around O and my luteal phase being short last month that everything will fall into place this month -- I think if it doesn't I'll really have to get tough.

Can anyone tell me if I could start taking the DHEA now - maybe it might help me even a wee bit in this cycle.

Jess

PS Nikki - mine are 8, 6, 4 (DS's) and then 2 and 9 mths (DD's) -- of course another DD would be great but really either would be fab

Jessica, in answer to your question: you CAN start taking the DHEA any time right up until you get your BFP (and you WILL get a BFP) -- once your PG is confirmed, you should not take DHEA. You might want to start with 25 mg in the mornings for about a week to make sure your body can handle it. Then you can up it to 50 or more, but then take it twice a day.

Hope this helps.

Krista
