Irregular periods 1st time in my life
Sun, 06-06-2004 - 3:35am
I am 41 and turning 42 in July. My cycle lengths since Dec 2003 were: 28, 29, 24, 25, 28, 39. This last LONG cycle length really upset me. This is the month my husband and I will try to get pg, so I was WAITING for my period to start and it took 39 days!

We have a 3 yo. We conceived her the second month after we married. I was 39 and gave birth at 39. Since I had no problems at 39 having a child, I took my reproduction for granted, and chose to wait until she was 3 to have another even though my OBGYN advised against it.

I am very down over my last cycle number of 39 days, because I know the writing is on the wall that I am entering perimenopause. My mom and grandma ended their periods at 59, so I didn't expect to start at 41.

I know that it will be more difficult to conceive now. That isn't what is really bothering me. What is bothering me is entering another stage of life. I have trouble with change and with aging. I have always looked younger than I am. I have to start focusing on the positives. I just have to get used to perimenopause. It just happened to me the last few months. Thanks for listening.

Dear Mary,

Thank you very much for replying and for the advice. I will definitely be making an appt with an RE in the next few days.

You were a BIG help!

One friend of mine got pregnant at 44 as do a whole lotta lovely 40+ ladies out there, therefore I pray you will too!

Try not to panic just yet. It could have been something other than perimenopause that caused your late AF. I don't know if you have been to an RE specialist yet, but you should immediately start testing. The first test they will run is a day 3 FSH and that will give them an idea of your egg reserve. I waited a little to long to start investingating things and now I really regret it.

Getting older is really hard. I turn 43 in August and have been TTC #1 for two years. We haven't given up hope yet, but I feel like a complete failure. I just got a BFN on my second IUI this past weekend.

Hang in there and don't procrastinate to seek help.
