IVF at 42? Is there even hope???

Hi everyone

I'm Becca and here's my pretty typical story:

I have a 15 year old son from a prior marriage and I've been married to hubby #2 for 2 years. I'm 42. We've been doing cycles of clomid and FSH shots for the past year and a half and we got pregnant last July only to miscarry 8 weeks later (right on my 42nd birthday!) Our next step is IVF.

We have our first Dr appt for IVF tomorrow and I spent some time online last night searching for anyting reassuring about success for 42 year old women. Needless to say, I'm pretty bummed out now. The internet has got to be the MOST depressing place in the world for a woman over age 40 who's TTC!

As you can imagine, this is gonna be emotionally and financially expensive. Is there anyone who can tell me something positive about our chances? I'm healthy and I'm ovulating and hubby's sperm are good. We got prego last July so we know it *can* happen. But it still seems like such a long-shot!

Please?!?!? Has anyone gotten pregnant from IVF here? Do you know anyone over age 40 who's gotten pregnant with her own eggs?

I need encouragement!

Hi Becca,

Welcome to the board!! I am glad you found us!!!! We are all in the same boat here TTC over 40!!! I have read about many celebrities that are having healthy children with their own eggs in their 40's. Madonna for one, and I know of quite a few others but am drawing a blank right now about which ones for sure were their own eggs so I don't want to misquote. Yes it is very possible!!

+++++++++Sending Prayers & ++++++vibes out to you!!!++++++

Hi Becca,

Thanks for your posts. I am 43 and ttc #1 and I am very interested in hearing more about recommendations for doctors. You said you went to see an ivf doctor. are there doctors who only do ivf? How would I come across such a doctor. I live in NYC.

thanks! best of luck to you on your ivf cycle!

I had my first meeting with the IVF Doctor this morning and I was pretty depressed all the way there since I was sure he was gonna tell us that we have a snowball's chance in hell at getting prego with my antique eggs but I was pleasantly surprised!

My FSH was only 3.8 and my E2 was 63 and those numbers are superb! But a 2nd blood test a day later only showed an E2 increase of 96% and they like to see that number around 140. So we are waiting another cycle to see if the numbers are better next month.

They did an ultrasound and checked out all my equipment and everything seems to be in good working order. I had 10 little tiny follicles on one side and 7 on the other and the Doctor thought we should be able to get at least 15 embryos when we do start the fertility drugs. He said our chances were about 25% success and I'm happy with that number. So we're gonna go for it!

...but not until next cycle.

:)

Becca

ps: Thanks for the nice words of encouragement. If anyone is interested, check my profile for a link to my over-40 fertility board.

i can tell you that it is possible. I am 46 and pregnant with #4 due in june.

I have also had 3 m/c with in the last 3 years. my last one in june of 03.

we did not due anything. Nor did dh and i get tested. the only thing i had

to do was take progestrine (sp) for the first 12 weeks.

so yes it is possible. And the results of the amnio all came back normal.

so dont give up.
