I've been reading this board -- the good, bad and neutral about TTC at 40+. I'll be 43 in a few weeks, am re-married (for 12 years now) and have decided to try for a baby before it's too late. Or is it too late? Reading some of your posts scares me.

I had an unexpected pregnancy at age 27, married and got divorced 18 months later. He's 15 1/2 now. I've always had regular periods and had no problems with my first pregnancy. I'm hoping that is the case with conceiving this time around (15 years later). It's so foreign to be planning it -- looking at CDs, reading about EWCM, O days, BDing, etc. LOL!

I've never had to try and am a little worried now that we've made the decision. Still, this is my first AF since we decided to go for it (doc ok'd it, too). I'm on CD 1 as of today. I have thyroid disease but keep it regulated pretty tightly with Synthroid and Cytomel.

I think the general words of wisdom are just relax and let nature take its course. I will not go the fertility treatment route if we're unsuccessful at conceiving a child together, so I hope I'm not setting myself up for heartbreak. I am really grateful to have carried a child but hope to have one more healthy baby before menopause kicks in.

Would appreciate intros and words of wisdom.

TIA! 8-)

HI Melissa, I am Lynda and I'm 44 years old. We had two wonderful children in our early 30s and at the age of 39 I found out I was pregnant with our third - surprise. we had a beautiful baby girl who is simply wonderful. so wonderful, she had made us decide to try to have another. we've been at it for two years now. I've had two miscarriages and one chemcial pregnancy. so pregnancy is possible, it's just harder to hang on to. I worry that i'm setting myself up for heartache too, cause we won't do any medical assistance either. But my dr. says that as long as i'm ovulating, i have a great chance to succeed in this war!!! so i stay positive and try my best to keep the faith. It truly is in God's hands, so i pray alot! This journey can wear you down. It can be so difficult at times, but I keep my focus on the "prize" if you will. to me, if i am successful in the end, it will be SO worth it!!! if I am not, then eventually I will find a way to live with it. God will help me get there. I believe we all go on our specific journeys for a reason. I don't know why God has led me down this path, but he has and I will walk it, hopefully understanding some day! I wish you the best of luck and hope you are successful quickly!! 43 is a great age to have a baby!!!

Hi Melissa,
Welcome to the board. You hit the nail on the head. Just relax and let nature take its course. I think that's one of the perks of being 40+, is that we have learned to be patient and work hard for what we really desire. We also understand that some things are or are not meant to be. I am 41 and we're ttc #3 after m/c earlier this year. It has been very difficult to be patient but we try to have faith that whatever happens, it happens for a reason.
I hope your ttc journey is successful. Best wishes to you.

Welcome, Melissa. I am 43 and TTC#2 for the past 2.5 years. My DS is 4 and dying for a sibling. I did IUI (15Xs because DH has MFI) unsuccessfully but have just tried embryo adoption. Hoping it worked -- like Ruth said, we aren't dead yet. GL to you. Relaxing is for sure a good start, so I wish you luck that your BFP will appear soon.

Krista- May I ask what MFI means? I looked under the acronyms link but couldn't find it. My husband suffers from incompetent ejaculation. I.e. BDing could go for HOURS without the desired deposit, which can be good if you're not trying for a baby. I know -- TMI, but it's what I'm dealing with. We'll either find a way to make it work naturally or do at-home AI.

Beyond that, we will not be trying any artificial means. Hell, I don't even know if I produce eggs, but I do know that I ovulate and that my periods are very regular, so that's a good start.

----

Ruth- I am absolutely heartbroken reading your experience. I know you're finally coming to terms with it. I could tell you were in shock and disconnected in your first post (plus you were drugged). I am so glad to hear you're not giving up hope and continuing to pursue your dreams.

Thanks, everyone for your welcome messages and providing information and hope.

Hi Melissa,

I just turned 42 a few weeks ago. I had a son when I was 21 and another when I was 24. I had a tubal ligation in 1994, then decided to have it reversed last December.

-------------------------

Paula = 43; Mike = 38; Tubal reversal 12/4/08, one tube reparied; Healthy baby girl born 2/16/10; PG again, EDD 3/18/11!

I forgot to add.... I was charting and temping every day using FertilityFriend.com. I also started using ovulation predictor sticks every day around the days FF said i woudl ovulate. I always ovulated one week later than FF said I should... so the OPK tests were vital to my getting PG.
