Hello to fellow TTC'ers-over-40 out there! It's nice to know you exist, and I only wish I knew back then (like when I was 41, 42, even 43) what I know NOW. A very brief history: Married DH just after turning 38 (DH 2 yrs older), first attempt to conceive (naturally, 4 months after wedding) successful; DD #1 born the day after our 1st wedding anniversary, 2 weeks after I turned 39. When DD #1 was 7 months old, and I was still 39, got pregnant again (naturally & unplanned); I actually CRIED for a few days because I thought it was happening too soon after DD #1 was born; oh boy was I uninformed! I had NO idea how good I had it . . . DD #2 was born when I was 40.4 years old. Both daughters perfectly healthy in every way. They are the light and joy of my life.

Was SOOO over-confident, cocky, cavalier, and mostly just plain IGNORANT of how quickly my fertility was plummeting after age 40-42 . . . I knew I wanted a third after DD #2 was a year old, but thought "the rules DON'T apply to me . . . I am fertile and can get pregnant whenever I want, just need to wait 'till it feels like the right time for our family . . . I didn't know until about one month ago that between the ages of 40 - 45 fertility can decrease 50% - 95%, regardless of my ease to conceive just a few years prior.

We have been TTC #3 for 1-1/2 years, albeit not as religiously or vigorously as we should have (again, that lack of knowledge really hurt us). Currently 45.6 years old. Have just started with an RE - had initial consult, day 3 bloodwork, and just today cultures and found out (today also) my FSH is 11.4 and estrogen 30. The nurse told me my FSH was very good for a 45-year-old, and my estrogen was excellent (should be under 100). Then met with RE who told me FSH 11.4 not so good; they like to work with a cutoff of 12. Also had slightly elevated thyroid, was retested today. DH having SA next week, having day 21 progesterone level test end of next week; this is all SO new to us.

Sorry for over-stating my hello. Just want to feel connected to others in this quest. Looking forward to staying in communication with you!

Hello and welcome.

All these fertility workups can get pretty confusing so if you have any questions let me know and I can try and help.

Hi Cathie and thanks so much for responding to my message. This is the first message board I've joined up with and first message I've posted. How nice to know someone is listening. Thanks for the feedback re: fertility testing. If I have questions (as if it were possible I wouldn't!) it's great to know you are here to help as well as the other ladies on this board.

Thanks for the info. re: thyroid. I had no idea mine was elevated or that it had any effect on fertility! It's encouraging what you said about meds for it and increased chances of getting pg. My RE did mention putting me on meds for it if the 2nd blood test warrants it.

My RE mentioned donor eggs in my very first consultation, before any testing had taken place, simply based on my age, no doubt. It's something my DH and I are very unsure about at this point. We are so new to this and need to play out our own chances for a while, I think, before we would revisit that as a possibility.

I haven't read much on this board yet, so forgive me if I'm asking repetitive or overly personal questions: Do you have children or are you ttc #1? Have you been at this a while? I wish you luck with IVF cycle #2 (I don't know enough about it to know how long an IVF cycle is or when you actually become implanted - sorry I also don't know many abbreviations at this point either!).

I am looking forward to visiting here often. Thanks again for saying hello and welcoming me!

With baby wishes,

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for the welcome. I really appreciate the feedback and support. Yes, Cathie did give me good advice - thanks to her when I was on the phone with the nurse at my RE today I made sure to ask about results of my 2nd thyroid test (taken on Monday) and if it was elevated and should I be on meds - sure enough, it was elevated again and they are already starting me on unithroid/synthroid immediately!

It's nice to know being so new to this, that I'm certain to find, every step of the way, someone who has already been through what I'm about to face - what on earth did all those poor women do before internet and message boards? It must have been a much lonelier and tougher road to travel.

With baby wishes,

Hello Mary and thanks for the welcome! I am really thrilled to have discovered this message board. I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you and to know what fertility stages and scenarios each of you are involved in. I hope this doesn't rub anyone the wrong way, but one of the reasons I was attracted to this particular board was the lack of "busy-ness" - not a lot of little icons moving around and things flashing out at me, etc. - not that I think there's anything wrong with that, but I wouldn't even know how to do all that stuff even if I wanted to! But primarily, I'm here to learn, to feel supported and hopefully eventually to help support others. In this case, to me, a word is worth a thousand pictures.

With baby wishes,

Leah
