Hi ladies, I'm 40 and have never been pregnant. I've been on iVillage for Years and my username is due to having had two foster kids for a few years whom I was about to adopt, but then things didn't work out, so I've been grieving their loss for a couple years and I'm now ready to try and get back on the horse so to speak. At my age and DHs age I'm thinking it's unlikely (he's 55 and has three grown daughters, up until recently wasn't sure if he was up to TTC again but I've sort of talked him into trying now just "casually" with natural methods, or at least to stop trying NOT to get pg) and for all I know I might not even be fertile...(like I said I've never been pg before), BUT I'm ready to start charting, have just joined the natural fam planning board too and I'm on my way out to the pharmacy right now to get a new basal thermometer so I can start charting today as I am on day 1 of a brand new cycle! (DH and I just finished printing a calendar and plotting in where all the *prescribed BD windows" for the next ten cycles (!) from now till December...since I'm usually pretty regular, 23 day cycle like clockwork, although of course we'll keep adjusting as necessary! OK I have to admit that all of this sounds as TMI to share on a public board, but I guess that's what this list is for...right?? I look forward to hearing any tips or advice that any of you might have for me taking into consideration that I"m going with natural methods, an only mildly cooperative DH and well, all that goes against me as far as age (like all of us here), never having been pg before, etc, etc! Thanks in advance!

Welcome aboard!!!!

At just 40, you're a youngster here on the board! LOL!!

I agree with what some of the previous posters (pp) have said - at only age 40, if you have no known fertility issues, I think you have a VERY good chance of getting pregnant!

Give it a go for about 3 months, then if you feel like it, just go have some cd3 bloodwork done (some insurance companies will cover this - check with yours first).

I also agree that not obsessing about ttc is critical to success!

Thank you sooo much Lynda and...Eli's mom! :)
I'm so glad I joined here - it already feels great to have some words of support even from strangers. (Bet we won't be complete strangers for long, heh!)
So far I'm taking it pretty easy, just getting used to the fact that I'm essentially reversing everything I've done for the last few years in terms of Natural Family Planning to *avoid* a pregnancy! (We've only been married four years - I had the foster kids while single and when he proposed he essentially won me over by saying he wanted to adopt them too...He took the loss much better than I did, though.)
So while I didn't actually chart temps before, we both kept a good handle of "what day it was" (in the cycle), so I can tell that's going to help now, too!
I'm just trying not to be too discouraged in thinking that it might be too late for me, so I appreciate the comments and encouragement about being "young"! (The grey hairs say otherwise, ha!)

Hi there and welcome!!! I am so sorry for the loss of your foster children. I considered doing this many times, but the thought of going through exactly what you are going through keeps me from committing. I commend you!!! but it is truly a loss!!! i wish you peace!!!

40 is still young. i had a baby girl at the age of 40. i'm trying for one more and have had 2 miscarriages in the last year. my advice is to relax and not get too worked up about it. chart and get to know your cycles but don't go overboard. i have found myself totally obsessed with it. i am trying to just let it go and see what happens. not easy i know. i wish you the best of luck in your ttc journey. i hope it is short and sweet for you!

Hello. Welcome to the board and good luck! 40 is still young and unless you have something to indicate infertility, you likely are still fertile. Charting is a great way to start. You will find a lot of info and support here that will help you through your journey. I hope you have a BFP to post soon.
