Hi Tana,

I've only got a second but wanted to say that I had my first just a couple of weeks before turning 40. He was so fun we decided to go for a 2nd and I was in a similar spot as you are. I decided to continue BFing but I did night wean and take Vitex. I got AF back within a month of doing that and got pregnant 3 months later with the darling little girl in the picture below. Please visit the TTC & BF board if you haven't already. They should have all the info you need to help encourage AF to come back. Then I recommend charting because women who are BFing often have a short luteal phase which can easily be fixed with progesterone cream (that's what I did).

Good luck!

Hi Tana,

I'm partly in the same boat, although I didn't have previous IF, I am 41 and bf my 7 month old and want one more...have you seen this?

I started with taking b50 and red raspberry leaf, and got my first ppaf back when dd was 6 1/2 months old and still nursing 10+ times per day, plus pumping 4-6 times per day. I am going to add vitex as soon as i get to the store. It might be worth trying while bfing for a little bit- only you can decide that. I have set myself a timeline that works for me.

Good luck!

Welcome! That is a really hard decision to make. I have been through many years of IF as well, through shots but not IUI or IVF. With my almost 14 yr old I stopped BF when he was 10 months so we could try again since at that time I needed shots to ovulate. My next successful pregnancy was 8 yrs later, so it took awhile. Fertility is a funny thing though, despite all our problems years ago, it has been much easier for me to get pregnant since I turned 40! Now if only my m/c rate had improved as well I would be laughing. I have been pregnant 3 times since then, all unassisted, but I only have my 2 yr old to show for it. There are other fertility issues with us though, so don't use us as a guide when it comes to m/c, I don't think it has anything to do with age for me.

Both with my 4 yr old and with my 2 yr old AF came back before I was finished nursing but had started to slow down. If you have issues with ovulating in the first place, it could take longer, or having had a baby could help, it is hard to say at this point. Bottom line is that you have to do what you feel is right. Try to put yourself 10 yrs down the road and evaluate what you think you would WISH you had decided. Like if you end up not having any more children, would you have wished you had kept BF? Or would you be content knowing that even though you stopped BF you tried to have another as best you could? Or if it turns out that you get pregnant right away, would you wish that you had kept BF and put off the second child a little longer? I don't know if that helps any or not, but that is what I sometimes do to help make decisions that don't seem to have a clear answer from this standpoint. And don't forget, many women have gotten pregnant while still BF'ing and before getting AF!

hi there and welcome to the board. it is truly hard to give up BF, but if you want another little one, it is probably necessary. I had to do it too!! but remember the end result is a playmate for your son, so don't feel too horribly guilty. I think a year is great. I went almost two years, but i've had a horrible time conceiving. I too, have had two miscarriages!!! I wish you much luck!!! there are loads of healthy pregnancies over 40!! don't let the articles scare you!!!
