New - would like some advice

Hi Everyone,
I turned 40 recently, have one marvelous 4 year old dd. DH and I have been trying for a year, used drug store ovulation kits, etc. Some months have been only "half hearted" efforts I have to admit, but we're now thinking about going to a clinic for iui. I know we can get pregnant. (I've been pregnant twice - first baby was stillborn, so dd was a heparin baby). We don't want a lot of tests as to why we're not conceiving, we just want to do the iui and see what happens. If, after 2 or 3 or even 4 tries it doesn't work, maybe we'll just close the door on the idea of a second child.

So my question is: Can we go to a clinic and just request to have iui done? I know we'll have to pay for it, which is another reason I don't want a lot of testing done.

Thanks

Hi, Brenda. I don't really have first-hand knowlege on IUIs (I went straight to IVF), but I did want to say welcome.

Since IUI is a pretty basic and benign procedure, and you've proven that you can have kids, they may go ahead without any testing. However, they could want to do a day 3 FSH or Clomid Challenge, just to get an idea of what your ovarian reserve looks like these days--a lot can happen to your fertility between the ages of 35 and 40. FSH testing is also one of the pitfalls of telling an RE, "I'm 40 and I want to get pregnant." LOL.

Good luck to you. Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks for the welcome, Jodi.
I feel like I've just walked into a new town in a new country with a new language. I have lots of research to do!

I did get 2 appointments for February. One at each of 2 different clinics, just to see. No problem getting the appointments. They were very friendly and welcoming.
