Newbie and preparing for IVF

Hey folks. I hope you'll welcome yet another newbie. I won't actually be 40 until the end of the month but given my cycle history my birthday will likel arrive before my next cycle so this seemed the right place to be. We've been TTC #2 for about a year and a half and began fertility treatments last February. I've had 5 cycles of Chlomid with either IUI or timed BDing and one failed cycle with Gohnal-F and now we're preparing to embark on IVF when my next cycle begins.

Last Thursday I went for my first ultrasound after 5 days on Gohnal-F and I learned I only had one follicle developing and it was still small. The doctor upped the dosage of the meds and I returned Saturday for another ultrasound and there was little further development so they cancelled my cycle and recommended IVF next cycle. Aparently I had a high FSH level on day 2 which they said was an indicator of ovarian aging and therefore the lack of response was not surprising and I should give some thought to using donor eggs (which I did and decided against for now). Has this happened to any one else out there? Any thoughts on what I can anticipate in the coming cycles? I was so discouraged after learning that I wasn't responding to the hormone therapy.

DH and I are blessed with a remarkable 3 year old daughter and the joy she brings to our lives has only multiplied my wish for more children. I can't bear the thought of not being a mother to at least one more child.

I hope my signature which includes a picture of my daughter doesn't offend those of you on the board who are trying to conceive #1.

HI JEANETTE, WELCOME TO THIS BOARD, IF I TOLD YOU MY HISTORY ABOUT MY LIFE I WOULD BE HERE UNTIL NEXT YEAR, SO I WILL MAKE IT BRIEF, I AM 43YRS OLD AND I HAVE 1 SON WHO IS 18, I HAVE BEEN DIVORCED FROM MY SONS DAD FOR OVER 10YRS NOW. I MET MY NEW HUSBANMD ON LINE OVER 4YRS AGO, HE IS QUITE A BIT YOUNGER THAN MYSELF AT 30 (BUT WHATS AGE) WE LOVE EACH OTHER DEARLY AND IN FEBRUARY OF THIS YEAR WE DECIDED TO TRY FOR A FAMILY, AS NOTHING WAS HAPPENING I DECIDED TO GO SEE MY DOCTOR AS I KNEW MY AGE WAS AGAINST ME, SHE DID A FEW BLOOD TESTS AND TOLD ME I WAS IN THE PROSESS OF THE MENOPAUSE, I HAVE TO HAVE REPEAT BLLOD TESTS IN OCTOBER BUT WAS TOLD IT IS UNLIKELY I WILL CONCEIVE, SO WE HAVE DECIDED TO GET REFFERED TO THE HOSPITAL TO FIND OUT WHAT IVF INVOLVES AND THEN TAKE IT FROM THERE, I TOO LIKE YOU CANT BARE THE THOUGHT OF GOING THROUGH LIFE WITH NO MORE CHILDREN, BUT THEN I GUESS IF THE WORST COMES TO THE WORST WE SHOULD THANK GOD THAT AT LEAST WE HAVE ONE CHILD. MAYBE WE CAN KEEP IN TOUCH AND SHARE OUR JOURNEY, I THINK IT HELPS TO SHARE THESE THINGS WITH PEOPLE GOING THROUGH THE SAME. Jeanette,

Do not give up your dream of having your own child and try to step away from the fact that you are over 40. Look at Suanne who just got a BFP ----dreams do come true !!!

I have been through 2 IVF with an ovarian reserve of 10.7. At 41, I was told that I would not respond well....boy were they wrong. First IVF I got 16 eggs and 14 mature/12 fertilized...4 transferred but none implanted. This past IVF in July (at 42) they got 17 again and 14 mature/13 fertilized w/o ICSI---all natural. Transferred 6 - 8 celled and we were sure it had worked...but I got a BFN. I am now taking a break trying to decide what to do.

My first IVF, only one ICSI egg did well so this 2nd time I did not do ICSI and they all fertilized but 1. I am thinking that perhaps with my older eggs, ICSI damaged them the first time and perhaps Assisted Hatching
