Newbie here with a question

Hi all, I'm 42 and have dd, 11 (with Asperger's that I think was caused by birth trauma, but that's a whole other topic), and ds, 7. Dh has been against having another, but after a recent oops scare, I think he was disappointed when the hpt was negative, so he suggested that I not go back on the pill. This is where my question comes in.

With the first 2, I had an extremely regular cycle and so knew the day I was late. But now, this is weird--I went off the pill just this past month, AF was due on 6/23, hpt was negative. I finally thought I was starting on 6/27, but it was only very light spotting, and now I'm still having only ultra-light spotting only when I urinate, and I don't have the usual extremely sore boobs that I have along with AF. Is this just me adjusting to being off the pill?

It didn't happen like this with the other 2, but I'm much older now. I am just horrified at the thought of menopause!

Hi there,

As someone else pointed out in a different post, most of us are probably perimenopausal at our ages, but that doesn't mean menopause is going to hit us tomorrow! :-) (You may also want to check out the PREGNANT AFTER 40 message board as well--there're some good tips there.)

A lot of us used to have periods like clockwork. For me, it was every 28 days. In recent months, it's changed to 25 day cycles (but I still have a long luteal phase, so that's good.) My OB said it's pretty normal and just something that changes for some of us as we get older.

I don't know enough about the pill to tell you if that's a side effect...but are you sure you're not pregnant? (e.g. have you gone in for a blood test?) If you don't get a real period soon, you may want to do another HPT... or check with your doc for a blood test. I'm not sure about the urine in the blood, but the rest sounds like it could've been implantation bleeding...

Anyhow, I hope you get this figured out soon!

Best of luck,
Lois

Thanks so much! I can't imagine being preggers at this point, but because I'm going to the doc for pain in my wrists tomorrow, I guess I'll go ahead and take another hpt, esp. given that they might want to do xrays tomorrow. Thanks for pointing that out!

Terry,

You can ask for an expedited blood test and they may be able to get your results in later today (or tomorrow before your blood work). Just to be completely sure.

When I was last pregnant, I didn't get a positive on the day my period was supposed to start--but rather about 3 or 4 days later (CD31 or CD32, instead of my (then) usual CD28).

Also, if you are urinating blood, you need to let your doctor know right away. (Or is it that you just notice a little blood when you're wiping etc.?)

Good luck!

Lois
p.s. DH and I have good friends who have a son with Aspergers. He's now a teenager and pretty self-sufficient. He's grown into a very handsome and smart young man...but our friends had a lot of challenges with him when he was much younger...

Thanks again. Actually, my doc appt tomorrow is with a GP because of pain in my wrists and I recently discovered that I have HBP when I used my mom's cuff, and also every time I'm in a store that has a BP tester. I guess I'll just tell them no x-rays and I'll also explain to the GP my recent cycle weirdness. Maybe they can do a blood test there.

As for the blood, it's a little clotted, like menstrual blood, but I only see it when I urinate. It's probably just a really light period due to being on the pill for so long, then being off for one month, but I definitely won't take chances with an x-ray w/out knowing for sure.

Geez, if my cycle is going to be this mixed up while ttc, I need to buy stock in whoever makes HPTs!

LOL! I know what you mean! We should all buy stock in HPTs and OPKs since so many of us seem to go through at least a box each month!

Welcome to the board!

I have heard from several women that it took a few months for their cycles to get back on track after discontinuing birth control pills.
