TTC and low-dose Xanax....

Hello to everybody -- I'm new here (although I used the TTC boards 9 years ago when I was TTC for the first time). Here's my question -- I take approximately 0.5 milligrams of Xanax each day for anxiety, but since the doctor who prescribed it to me is always telling me what a VERY small dose that is, do you think I should just keep on with it even though I might get pregnant sometime?..... Has anyone else here ever gotten pg while on low doses of Xanax (also called Alprazolam)? Thanks in advance for any replies and GOOD LUCK to everyone here.

hi, molly (?),
I have no idea. that is really a question for your doctor. I wouldn't want to risk it, however.

hope that helps,

long term use of xanax is NOT recommended as it is addicting they should switch you to something like zoloft during your PG. Also Xanax has a very short half life and is only for panic attacks that need a "quick" response. Xanax starts working within 15 min but only last about 4-6hrs then its cleared from the body. Zoloft on the other hand works for 24hrs and is used for generalized anxiety and panic attacks(needs 4 weeks to build up in your body) but then you have a steady level. most docs do not want PG women on xanax although it can be safe for an occasional panic attack its NOT safe for daily use. Zoloft is considered safe in PG.

I speak from experience because I have a heart issue (arrythmia)that when it gets out of control causes me to feel panicky, I too used xanax to cope on an occasional basis maybe one dose, once or twice a month while PG.
