My plan...

Hi all.  I hope everyone is doing well.  Sorry for being MIA.  I'm trying to take a break from all things fertility but I can't seem to get away from thinking about it everyday.  Sigh.  Anyway, I have a plan and news about DH I wanted to share with someone and you girls know me best.  So here goes...

First off DH went to the rheumatologist yesterday and they did xrays because it had been several years since he had them and got horrible news.  DH has NO cartilage in one hip and only SOME in his other one and in both knees.  :(  They said there is nothing more the doctor can do on his end about it.  His imflammation is under control at this time yet DH still hurts, well I guess this is why.  DH will NEED at least one hip surgery probably several since he's so young (36) and some doctors won't do more than one.  Thus the best thing DH can do to maintain what cartilage he has and make it so his hip surgery lasts longer is to lose weight.  DH is in pain but no more than usual so he doesn't need hip surgery right now but dr wants him to lose as much weight as possible as quickily as possible and actually suggested gastric bypass but DH doesn't want to do that.  He wants to do it on his own.  SO he is going back on Atkins.  :P   Hopefully it will work and he will lose some weight.  He was in the 400s, then lost over 100 on Atkins and has regained maybe 30 lbs or so of it, but regardless he needs to get to lower 200s to be overweight and 185 to be 'normal' weight.  Wow that would be so weird if he got down that low.  ANYWAY, so that has me thinking maybe this is why we don't have a baby yet.  Maybe I am just meant to care for him.  Hip surgery is no little thing and he will need in both hips likely more than once.  :(  I don't know...

So since DH is losing weight I am too.  I was already planning on doing so but with DH on plan that makes it easier for me.  He is more motivated than ever since he's facing such circumstances.

We are still planning on IVF next year at this time but I think I want to push it til summer uptime June/July.  That will give me a good 6 months (and him) to lose some weight and who knows maybe that will help DH's counts too and maybe just maybe we can use some of his sperm.

Also if this IVF doesn't work, we're done.  We can't afford adoption nor do I think we're good candidates for it given DH's condition which of course makes me wonder if we should even try once more.   I don't even really want to do IVF one more time let alone more than that and our insurance will likely be out or nearly out after this next time.  I guess I may change my mind later but at this time, that is our decision.

It sounds like you have a great handle on planning your timing out just perfectly! I too struggled with weight loss before, during, and after treatment and ended up having weight loss surgery, but that was right for me, it's not for everyone. One day at a time and you both can do it and get as healthy as possible for his hip surgery AND to run after your little one!

Me (36) DH (38)- me-unexplained IF/hypothyroid -DH-counts good, but volume is low; Married in 2006, off birth control pill. Started officially trying in March of 2009.
2 rounds clomid/ovidrel 2009, 1 round femara/iui, 2010, 2 rounds follistim/iui 2010. Weight loss surgery 2011.  Back to new RE 2012: HSG normal, AMH 0.43= DOR; IVF with microdose flare protocol in February 2013.

Elizabeth, I think your plan sounds good. I am so sorry to hear about DH's diagnosis. It's great that you two are such a good team and can support each other through all of this. Hopefully things will improve all around for you two. (((hugs)))

That sounds like a great plan!!!  Doing something together to get both of you as healthy as possible is certainly a productive direction...and it can't help but improve his situation and yours.  Wishing you tons of luck with the weight loss, please KUP!
