am I giving my son too much pumed milk?

I had been giving my son about 6oz of pumped milk for awhile. However, I had posted a message on one of the other boards on here that had lactation consultants and they said I should only be giving him only around 4.5 to 5 oz at the most. They gave me the calculator from the kellymom website and he feeds approx 5-6 times a day. It says if he feeds 5 times he should be getting about 5oz and 6 times he would be getting around 4.16oz. He doesn't always feed the same amount every day. So I guess now I know why I couldn't keep up with supply as I was feeding him too much. I give him a bottle before bed and overnight or otherwise he falls asleep and he wakes up hungry an hour later. I tried it Friday night and he did it again so I am stuck with bottles for overnight. Not sure why he does it but he does.

I also was told to use the slowest flow nipple and maybe that is why I was feeding him too much and he was taking it all. I feel bad I was overfeeding him but my doctor said that 6oz was fine and I never questioned it until I was not able to keep up with supply for bottles and had to supplement in formula.

I did 5oz before bed and he took it all and didn't ask for more. I'm going to try a little less today and see what happens. If not then we will stick with 5oz. She also said that they should be eating about 25oz in a day. I didn't know if this was correct or not but I was just wondering if any of you had ever had any issues or advice about this.

I agree that you should just feed him until he is full. In terms of supply, BFing stimulates much better than pumping, so the more feedings you can BF and the less you can pump, the better off your supply will be.

But I also agree that you shouldn't feel guilty for giving some formula if you need to--you're right, you're giving him a wonderful gift by BFing for this long, even though he gets some formula, too. So no worries!

Well I tried 5 oz yesterday and he was still hungry so I ended up feeding him 6oz. The other day I fed him 5 and he was fine with it. So I guess it just depends. I am going to try 4.5 and see how that goes. My ped said 6 was OK but I just felt I was feeding him too much after I saw the calculator on kellymom. However you are right every baby is different. I wish I could just BF him at night but I have tried and tried and it just doesn't work. He just wakes up and wants more and I'm up with him half the night. He's teething now too so I wonder if everything could be off and I shouldn't judge it on that right now.

Kelly- the kellymom website is based on 25 oz per day. Supposedly acc'd to the lactation consultant on the LC board on here they shouldn't be eating more than that but I find that hard to believe as every baby is different. My son has been a big eater from the beginning. I do supplement only 1 bottle or 2 at the most with formula so I guess it isn't that bad. That way he is getting the benefits of bm and also he gets formula too. I had friends who's kids where exclusively bf and had issues but the kids who were ff didn't. Plus he was given bm for the first 4 months exclusively so I shouldn't feel bad about it. Some moms aren't able to bf at all and want to.

I can tell you that by the time Elena was David's age she was definitely taking 6 oz per feeding, and that was being fed every 3 hours (except for at night), or about 5 feedings a day (so 30 oz total).

Our ped told us no more then 6 oz per feeding, but we only do 4 oz per feeding. If he wants more, we give him more, but mostly he is good with 4 oz. I know he is getting enough because he is growing, and he sleeps through the night. He is happy, eats every 2-4 hours, and doesn't spit up nearly as much as before when we were giving him 6 oz. We also noticed when it comes to the bottle he has no full filter. He does not stop eating until it's gone or he falls asleep. I would lower the amount you give him to 4-5 oz and see how that goes. Some babies just eat more then other babies.

We are on formula but during the say Simon eats roughly 6 oz every 2-3 hours. He does spit up now and then but I have a hard time with them saying he should only be eating so much. He will tell you when he is full. If your Ped isn't worried about him being to
