Sandy,

I don't know that there is necessarily something "wrong" because he won't sleep through the night. I think many babies wake to eat during the night until they are over one, regardless of going through "sleeping through the night stages" previously. Babies stomachs are very small and they just need to eat during the night so they don't feel hungry.

Here's an article about sleeping through the night: http://www.kellymom.com/parenting/sleep/sleep.html

I especially liked this excerpt:
"Probably one of the main reasons that night-waking babies are such a big issue is that parents don't have realistic expectations of the sleep patterns of babies. We are bombarded with magazine articles and books that perpetuate the myth that babies should not have nighttime needs. Babies were designed to wake up often at night to feed and cuddle-- keep in mind that many adults wake during the night, too. If our expectations for babies were not so different from our babies' expectations for themselves, much of this "problem" might disappear."

It also says some of the main problems for increased night waking are teething and growth spurts.

If I were you I would just follow David's lead--if he needs to eat during the night he needs to eat--soon he will be three and this will be in the distant past, hang in there Mommy, and try not to worry!

Sandy,

I agree with Adrienne, it sounds like a growth spurt and possibly his teething as well.

Ash,

Teddy is so cute! Glad you had a good time with your mom during her visit.

AFM,

Last night, we hooked up webcams so my parents could see Maxim live. They bought a pair of webcams and are bringing one of the pair up to us next week to use. So exciting! They are coming for their visit next week and will be here until Father's Day so woo hoo!

Amy - Hope you were able to get in with your OB to find out what's going on. That would drive me crazy not knowing. Hope you're doing well!

Grace - You lucky duck. :-) Are you going to find out the sex of the baby?

Cheryl - Hope Luke's waking every 2 hours was just a fluke. Selin had a night like that a few weeks ago and I got so afraid that her STTN was over but thankfully it was just one night. Last night she would not go to bed for anything, even though she was tired. I finally got her to fall asleep with some white noise just before 10pm, way past her bedtime. That is awesome that your DH was able to be home with you for so long! My DH had to be back at work the day we got home from the hospital but his workload was slow those first few weeks so he was home by the early afternoon at least. Have fun at your nieces dance recital. I went to my cousin's DD's dance recital a few weeks back with Selin and it was so cute.

Ella - Thanks for your support. I never thought that DH would act like this. He seemed really happy when Selin was first born but then it was like all of a sudden everything became overwhelming for him. I fear that he won't want to TTC #2 for awhile now but I'm not going to bring it up until end of this year/beginning of next year. I want to go off BCP and do FAM again so I was planning to have that talk with him at the end of this year. So glad your night out went well and Eliza survived as well! Just curious, what time does she normally go to bed? Selin is usually in bed by 9pm and I've been wondering how I can get her to bed earlier. She won't fall asleep unless she is nursing or being rocked near white noise. On occasion, if she is super tired she will go to bed earlier. The earliest has been 7:15pm.

Cassie - So sorry to hear about your DH's interview but I guess at least he knows instead of them leaving him wondering. You're lucky you're getting responses from job hunting - I haven't heard a peep from any of the positions I've applied for. I want the hospital position so bad but I'm trying not to get my hopes up. Score on the CL stuff!

Ruby - Sorry to hear about Maxim wanting to be held all the time. Just keep at it and you'll find something that works for you. Selin was like that the other day, not wanting to nap anywhere but in my arms, and as a result, didn't take a proper nap until 4pm because all day whenever I would put her down she would scream. This too shall pass. :-)

Adrienne - Thanks for sharing your 10 year plan! I'm hoping to do my student teaching next Spring but probably won't actually start teaching for a few years, unless the market improves sooner. So how many kids is "several"? :-)

Sandy - Sorry about David's sleeping/eating troubles. Hopefully the pedi will be able to help you out. He is such a cutie pie! Can't believe he is 6 mo already.

Ash - So great to hear from you! Glad your mom's trip went well. You're heading to the States in a few months, right? Teddy is cute as always!

AFM - I just sent an email off to my boss about reducing my hours to 4 days/week and/or working from home a few days/week so we'll see what she says. I had my BFF proof the email because she is good at negotiation, lol. Not much going on here. Selin and I went to our monthly LLL mtg yesterday. She loved hanging out with the other babies. The group is planning to go to the pool every Friday now so I am going to have to get Selin some sort of swimsuit and swim diaper - any suggestions? I have tons of hats for her already and know it's too early to use sunscreen, right?

Sandy- I'm so sorry that David is sleeping poorly. It can get so hard to deal with sleep deprivation night after night. I'm not to that age yet so no advice from me. Just hugs and the hope that it gets better soon!

Ruby- Have fun with your parents! I hope Maxim is back to taking naps in his own room but if not I just wanted to let you know what helped me. Due to Teddy's colic I had to hold him/ have him in the wrap pretty much 24/7 until just recently. He has just started to be able to sleep short periods in his pram and in his room. Although nights he still sleeps on me we at least don't need the wrap anymore. I found that getting everything set up on the couch; snacks, remotes, pillows, blanket, books, etc helped a lot as there were a few weeks that I slept out on the couch in a semi-reclining position. Its not how I planned it but it was the only way that either of us were getting any sleep. Remembering that it was just a stage helped a bit but not much, however letting myself be OK with doing nothing more then catching up on new tv shows and movies, while breastfeeding and comforting Teddy did help some.
You're doing a great job, I really believe the first few weeks are brutal! (at least with a baby like Teddy they were:D)

I've been reading the thread on my ipod while night feeding, so let's see what I remember to catch up.

Christine-Parenthood is stressful on a marriage. I hope that the break does help. We started Gideon on a sippy at 6 months, but as long as Selin has some head control I think it would be fine to start earlier. Use something with a soft spout and you can start without the valve to make it easier for her as well. I am glad your road trip went well.

Ella-Your night out sounds wonderful. Dinner and a movie what's that? LOL We haven't seen a movie together in theatres since I was pregnant with Gideon. We have a date to see Toy Story 3 with Gideon coming up though.

Amy-I hope you've been able to get in touch with your OB to figure things out.

Cheryl-I can't believe Lucas is already 2 months old. Time flies., Z will be a month tomorrow.

Cassie-If Simon has pretty good head control, he may like the bumbo seat. We got ours used and pretty inexpensive and G loved it. We had the tray too so he could explore toys with it too.

Ruby-WTG on the weight loss. Z has had a few of those won't let you put him down days. He had one the other night and we had to take turns holding him to get sleep at night. For Z I think some of it is his reflux. My MIL wants to hold him all of the time when she's here. She gets upset when I tell her no.

Ok, I have a few more posts to read, but I've got to call HR about Z because he apparently isn't added to my insurance and the insurance company is saying his newborn visit was covered, but I got a bill from the pediatrician's office.

My Mom teaches at a community college and loves it. She only teaches one day a week in addition to her full time job. Once she retires she may pick up more classes. You could probably work it out to teach around DH's schedule.

It could be a combination of a growth spurt and teething. I think we started with foods in the evenings at 6 months and it didn't do anything for Gideon's sleep. Is he acting hungry when he wakes up or do you think he's just nursing for comfort? For sleep training with that our ped. suggested to time feedings, so say he's averaging 10 minutes for a feeding. When he wakes up only feed him for 9 minutes, next night 8, and so on. He'll figure out its not worth it to wake up for 2 minutes and he won't. We didn't do this because night waking didn't bother us. Our ped. said he had to do it with one twin and not the other.

Ash-That's wonderful that you were able to get out while your Mom was there. I remember going out to Target without Gideon and joking it was a huge date night. How much does Teddy weigh now? The pictures look great.

Unless you have my child, who will still wake up in the middle of the night and ask for a snack;) I so want his metabolism.

There is a site called totsy.com. They sell kids/baby items at a discount. Right now they have iplay bathing suits for 10.80, they have a built in swim diaper and SPF 50. Send me a PM with your email address and I can send you an invite if you'd like (that goes for anyone else too)
