Baby is here!
Mon, 01-03-2011 - 12:47pm

Short version: My second baby David Allan was born this Tuesday, 12/28/2010. He weighed 7lbs 8oz and was 19.25inches long. His apgars were 8 and 9.

Long version: My due date was, 12/31 so when I went to midwife on Monday (12/27) morning and found out I was 4cm dialated, I was pleasantly surprised! I've been having "false labor" contractions for about four weeks though and they had been increasing in intensity and duration, so it was nice to hear they were doing something. The midwife asked if I'd like to have my membranes stripped since she knew I was worried about going overdue and ending up with a huge baby. I went into labor the day I had my membranes stripped with James (at 41 weeks). So I asked her to do it that day. All day Monday I had slightly painful contractions, but I couldn't get a good pattern going. They would be 10 minutes apart, 20 minutes, 7 minutes, etc. Still, I felt like it would probably happen sometime in the next week, so I spent all day getting my house cleaned up and getting prepared, just in case. Around 6 some friends of ours called and asked if we'd like to get dinner and hang out. I figured that would be a nice distraction since it did not seem like labor was coming any time soon. They came up around 7 and we went out for pizza. The whole time we were at the restaurant, my contractions were 5-7 minutes apart. I could tell they weren't long or strong enough to be active labor, but the consistency was kind of encouraging. When we got home things seemed to fizzle out again. Around 11pm I suggested we go for a walk down to Starbucks, and on the way there and back I had a couple of pretty strong contractions, but again by the time we got home, they had pretty much fizzled out.

I went to bed around 12:30, dissapointed, figuring it would probably be at least a few days before labor really started. Shortly after laying down, maybe 30 minutes, I had a painful contraction that lasted 3 minutes. 2 minutes later I had another shorter, but still painful one. After 10 or 15 minutes, with the contractions continuing to come close together, I decided to get up and move around to see if that would change anything, I was kind of hoping the contractions would go away so I could get some sleep. When I got up the contractions did not stop, and continued to be consistently spaced between 3 and 5 minutes apart and were getting stronger and more intense. The midwife had warned me that morning that things might go pretty fast when they started, so I should come in sooner rather than later. Around 2am I decided to call the midwife and let her know what was going on. The midwife on call that night was one I had only met once before, and I was a little dissapointed about that as I was hoping to have one of the other 4 midwives, but she was nice and helpful, so that was fine. She agreed it sounded like I was probably in labor and encouraged me to call someone to stay with James, and to come in as soon as the contractions got more intense. I still wasn't totally convinced this was actual labor, so I decided to text my brother and see if he was awake instead of calling my MIL and waking her up to come be with James. They were both about an hour away, but I felt like if I my brother was already up, I wouldn't feel as bad about asking him to drive down for nothing. (He works night shifts so is often up in the middle of the night) I got ahold of him and he agreed to come down. In the amount of time it took me to text back and forth with him, my contractions intensified enough that I was pretty sure we would need him here asap.

Once I knew this was really labor, I went in and woke Dylan up, and told him what was going on, I told him to go back to sleep and I would wake him when it was closer to time to go. I decided to take a shower so I would be nice and clean for going to the hospital. The shower kind of sped up my contractions, but it also felt really good have the hot water on me, so I stayed in there a while. I was moving pretty slow so it took me forever to finish showering, dry off, get dressed, and get all my stuff together. By the time I was done with that I was in pretty serious labor. I could only tolerate the contractions sitting on the birth ball, and I had to vocalize some through the peaks. It had been about an hour since I spoke to my brother, so I woke up Dylan and told him we would need to leave as soon as my brother got here. When my brother got here a few minutes later I had Dylan call the midwife and we headed to the hospital. I was so lucky we were so close, I only had to about 3 contractions on the 2 mile ride to the hospital. The labor and delivery suite is on the 3rd floor and as we got on the elevator I complained to Dylan that I could tell I was going to have a contraction on the elevator. I couldn't move during contractions, so we had to hold the elevator for like a minute when we got to the top floor as the receptionist watched me have a contraction, kind of awkward ;-). I was grateful it was the middle of the night and there weren't alot people in the hospital to observe me in labor, for some reason it felt good to be very private when I was having contractions. (mostly because I was making weird noises and yelling at Dylan how to push on my back)

We got into a room right away, and our nurse came into meet us. His name was "Danny". This freaked me out a little because a male nurse was not what I had envisioned, but he ended up being great, and it really, really did not matter. My midwife also showed up, with a surgical mask on, I guess because of hospital protocol she has to wear a mask because she didn't get a flu shot. Anyway that really bothered me at first, but it also ended up not mattering at all, she was great, and I very rarely had my eyes open during contractions anyway. I had talked to Dylan about not getting an IV line put in because the hospital doesn't require it and I really, really wanted to avoid feeling like a sick person, and also really wanted some barriers in the way of easy access to drugs. He had originally fought me on it a little, but now that we were here he said it was my choice and so I turned it down. The nurse took some blood from me, and they put me on the monitors for 20 minutes. I'm glad I didn't wait any longer to go in, I don't think I could have put up with sitting on the monitors an hour later. The midwife checked me after the 20 minutes and I was at 5.5cm's and 90% effaced. I was a little dissapointed since I had only gained 1.5 cm's the entire day, but I tried to think positive. I decided to get in the tub at that point. I don't know that the tub helped a ton, but it did feel nice in between contractions, so that was helpful I guess.

After an hour or so in the tub (who really keeps track of time while they're in labor?) I decided to get out of the tub. Dylan (DH) had been pushing on my back during contractions before I got in the tub, and he couldn't do that as easily in the tub, so I wanted to try a different position. I was freezing when I first got out so I curled up on my side in the bed with warm blankets. This felt unproductive though, so I decided to have the midwife check me, and then get on the birth ball. She checked me and I was at 7.5 cm. I thought it would be a little further, but at least progress had been made, and she assured me things were going really well. The next hour (or however long, it was is kind of blur) I was on the the birth ball, and I think I had the monitors on for a little while. At some point I noticed it helped the contractions feel a little better if I pushed during them, and the midwife encouraged me to do whatever felt good. After a little while of pushing on the birth ball she suggested I move to a birthing stool. I hadn't really considered using a birthing stool to give birth, but it sounded a heck of a lot better than getting back up in the bed, so I agreed and she got everything ready. I didn't really think I could be in trasition or ready to push yet since I didn't feel an overwhelming urge to push, but I just decided to go with it. I moved over to the birth stool and DH sat behind me to support me. The midwife checked me again, there was only a small lip of cervix left! She said she could push it out of the way in the next few contractions if I wanted her to. That sounded great to me.

At this point it was about 6 am. Pushing through the contractions felt good, but it was also by far the most painful part of labor. I know I was screaming really loud during some of it, and I think at some point I told Dylan I didn't want to do it anymore. Like that was an option, haha. Anyway, after 15 minutes or so Dylan asked how much cervix was left, and the midwife said it was all gone now. I knew this meant the baby could come out so I started pushing really seriously. (and screaming really loud) Everyone was really encouraging and kept telling me how awesome I was doing.

Congrats on your little peanut, Grace! And I ditto what Megan said: I found your story very encouraging and hope my second labour will go as smoothly as that.
David is adorable - how is James dealing with it all?
