Bleach baths for MRSA?

Just typing the name MRSA (pronounced MERSA) freaks me out but sadly, Selin has been diagnosed with it. For the last week or so, she was getting these zits on her upper thigh and abdomen and I had ped take a look at them when I brought her in Monday for her chicken pox vaccine. She swabbed it and today they called me to say it tested positive for MRSA.

She's been on Bactrim since Monday and now we're also supposed to do bleach baths 2-3x/week for 3 weeks and also put Bactroban in all of our noses. DH had a zit on his wrist a few weeks ago and I've been getting them in the same places as Selin since last fall but two different primary docs and my dermatologist told me they didn't know what it was so I didn't know what to do. I've been putting Bacitracin on mine as soon as they pop up and that seems to shorten the duration but I'm still getting new spots every week or so. I was tested for MRSA last summer when I got that nasty spider bite but it came back negative so I have no idea how the heck I got this in the first place. I don't know if I do have MRSA now but I'm following Selin's regimine anyway since I have the same symptoms and as the ped said, passed them on to her via contact, which I'm now realizing was probably from showering with her because the hip I usually hold her on is where I have some of my spots.

We did the first bleach bath tonight and I sat in the tub with her. The ped said to mix 1 cup of bleach with the bathwater but after some research online, I decided to only use 1/2 cup in a few inches of water and only for 5 minutes. I only bathed her from her chest down and she seemed to tolerate it well. We both smell like bleach of course, but only if I sniff our body, you can't smell it from afar so not too bad.

Has anyone ever had to do bleach baths before, for themselves or for their LOs? I feel horrible that I passed this on to her and now her perfect baby skin is getting scarred from these stupid zits. :-(

No experience, but I am sorry you are going through this. I opened my baby book (on total coincidence) to this page, and I felt so bad for you both for going through this. Wishing you all the best.

No experience or advice to share. Sorry you have to go through this. Bleach baths do not sound pleasant. I hope this treatment is short-lived!

Christine - No advice, but how horrible. When you mentioned this I didn't even think about something like this! How awful. I hope the bleach baths work and the antibiotics, I can't imagine having to bath in bleach...

HUGS! Give Selin a hug for me.

Thanks Cassie. I hope this does the trick, too. I'm so tired of getting these on my body and now I feel so guilty that she's getting them, too. At least she's not bothered by them or the bleach.

The research I did online did show that it was effective for scabies and eczema so hopefully it will work for MRSA, too.

Oh Christine that does not sound fun for you or Selin! I hope that it goes away quick. I have no idea about the bleach baths. Keep you guys in my thoughts.

I was thinking I had read somewhere they were doing research for bleach baths for eczema.
