I've been looking for a gently used car seat so we can have one for my parents' car. A woman from my LLL group has a very gently used Britax Roundabout and is willing to sell it to me for $70. It expires 10/10/2013.
A few questions:
I've heard good things about Britax in general. Does anyone own this model? How do you like it?
I know Britax seats aren't cheap so does $70 sound like a reasonable offer?
Lastly, should I buy a seat that only has about 2-1/2 years left on it?

$70 is a great price as long as you are confident that it has not been in an accident.
That being said, I think most Britax go up to 60-65 lbs FFing (ours goes to 65 lbs) so, potentially, Selin could be using the seat for well past 2.5 years so you'd need to buy a new one (although I don't know much about expiration dates and car seats -- how important is it to replace them when they expire?).
If it is a roundabout 50 on the other hand it is a decent deal it has the same shell as an old school Marathon, and will rear-face and forward face for a reasonable amount of time. in 2 1/2 years Selin will be 3 1/2 and you can decide if you are getting her a new convertible or forward facing only seat at that point in time, that will last her to booster age, or even till she only needs a low back booster. It is a decent price for that type of use.

Plus there are tons of new improvements in even 1 to 3 years in the car seat world, safety is always improving, by the time a car seat expires 6 or 8 years after it is made, there have likely been a ton of new safety improvements to car seats, that you can now take advantage of.
Just as an example, we have an old school Marathon that rear-faces to 33 pounds. Shortly after we got it they came out with the 35 pound rear-facing Marathons. Now they have a completely redesigned Marathon that has a new shell and is different from the old Marathon and rear-faces to 40 pounds. It has a new and improved shell, it has head type wings and a special change for forward facing to help when a child is thrown forward in a crash. It is a completely different seat then the one I got 3 years ago when Desmond was about to turn 1.

I have a Britax Roundabout 55, and I'm only lukewarm about.
Our two current car seats (Graco, exact same seats, great condition) were given to us by my friend who no
longer needed them so I haven't really done a lot of
research on car seats. Guess I have some shopping to do!
For example as a backup seat for under $70 the Scenera is from Target rear and forward faces to 40 pounds for around $40, it doesn't rear-face till 40 pounds if you get it from all stores though so you have to be careful to read the tags.
I don't remember all the car seats that are suggested in that price range but if you ask on car-seat.org someone will be able to help you or there maybe a link there can help.
