BTDT - From Crib to bed

Simon isn't attempting to crawl out of his crib yet (surprisingly enough since we crawl on everything!) However, we are spending this week at my folks place as they will be out of town so I am here for chores and such. Anywho, all we have here is his pack and play which he is about to out grow. We were talking about attempting to get him to sleep on the twin bed that is also in the room. We do the cry it out thing... So right now we put him in his crib and on a bad night he will cry for maybe 3 min and then lay down and go to bed. How do I transition him to the bed? His crib at our house just turns into the toddler bed by taking the front rail off the bed. I'm not sure how to keep him in the bed. I attempted to lay down with him tonight but he wasn't really interested there were so many other things.

Looking for some advice and how others have done this. What age did you transfer your child from the crib into a bed?

Cassie- David started climbing out of his crib at 18 months so we had no choice. We have a crib that coverts to a bed so we just did the conversion and it has a rail in front of it on the one side. Anyway we stayed at my dad's not even a week after we put him in his bed. He would not sleep in a pack and play. We just put him on the bed in my dad's house. He did fine. I put blankets ect on the floor in case he fell off. But he didn't. If you are afraid he will fall off, then you can always get rails for the bed. I don't know how much they cost though. also I have heard of people putting a matress on the floor or getting portable beds for travel. As I said, david did well for the transitions so we don't have to worry.

Also for home we put a gate in front of his room so he won't go walking around in the middle of the night. But now once he's asleep he doesn't do it. I still keep it there at night but during naps I don't.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Sandy and Mari. I put him in there tonight. We brushed his teeth in there instead of in the living room like normal. He did his normal crying but didn't attempt to get off the bed. after his normal time he had moved up to the top of the bed and laid down. I'll go check on him again here shortly. I figured I would give him a chance to get soon and asleep before I snuck in again. Let you know what happens in the morning.
