BTDT: Extended BFing and BC

This is kind of a part 2 to my previous thread - 'What the heck'. I don't mean to exclude anyone here but I really need responses from BTDT's that are extended BFing only to make an accurate decision.

As I just updated in my previous thread, I had my appt with the OB today. She basically said that I'm no longer protected on the minipill and that I either need to stop BFing (which is out of the question), or switch to another form of BC. She is recommending the Mirena IUD since it supposedly won't affect my milk supply but still provide protection. I have to see if it will be covered under our insurance, otherwise she said it's about $700. I'm going to have a chat with DH about it soon so we can figure out what to do.

I would love to just ditch BC altogether and go back to FAM, but we do not have maternity coverage at the moment (as most of you are previously aware) so we absolutely cannot afford an oops right now, otherwise I'll be having a homebirth and praying I don't need to be transferred to a hospital, lol! We don't use condoms because DH has ED issues related to his prostatitis (sp?),

Hi Christine,

*For those of you who are extended BFing (past one year), what are you currently doing for BC?

I decided to get the copper IUD because I wanted something non-hormonal. It was inserted when Ben was about 3 months old.

*For those of you who have the IUD/Mirena, how do you like it?

Well, other than a few moments of discomfort getting it in, I think it's great. After taking the BCP every day for years, it's nice to have something I almost never have to think about. The only possible downside of a copper IUD that I'm aware of is possible heavier period/worse cramping. However, my periods have not returned yet, so, so far, so good.

I think some peoples bodies are more sensitive to waking up than others.

Christine, you are right, you need regular sleep for your temps to be accurate, so I'd say you should stick to CM (that's what I'm doing, since Fede still wakes up randomly every other night). Since you will be using spermicide as a backup, you will be fine.

So DH and I had a chat today about BC and he is finally ok with doing FAM and using a spermicide as backup! I still cannot believe that I get to ditch the pills after this cycle! I just ordered some sort of contraception gel, based on the reviews, so we'll see how it goes. There are so many products out there so it's hard to know which one will work for us. I think I'm also going to follow Mari's advice and wait until FF says I ovulated, plus a few extra days just in case. ;-)

The only thing I'm not certain of is temping. Don't you have to take it when you've been asleep for at least 3 hours? I'm not sure what time I should do it because lately our cat has been waking me up at like 4am to eat, or if I have to get up with Selin in the MOTN, I'm afraid it's going to throw off my temps.

Thanks Sandy. Yeah, we've checked out all possible options and until I get a job with benefits, we have to be on this private insurance and wait until Oct 2012 to TTC. And 7.5 months is awesome for BFing! Anything is better than nothing. :-)

AFM - Well my saga continues. I thought I was all set with the Rx my doc wrote for me yesterday (TriNessa), and I filled, but I ran it past my friend/LLL leader today (I tutor her son on Sat. mornings) and she checked it against her BFing and Meds book and it is not recommended. So, I was feeling very frustrated about the whole situation and the ticking clock - I leave for vacation in 3 days and my pack is going to run out while we're gone so I needed to have something with me for the next cycle - when I emailed my friend again tonight and she suggested doing FAM and using a spermicide. Duh, I never even thought of using a spermicide! When were were doing FAM two years ago, I used

Christine,

I work for BCBC and I know my plan you don't have to wait a year for maternity but that is probably since it is a private plan it is different. I think maternity coverage automatically comes on our plans. I only had a private plan once was when I was too old to be on my parents plan and I wasn't married yet. I think it was for 2 years or so but it was a pain.

So yesterday I approached DH again about FAM to make sure we're on the same page come next cycle and he said he was just joking (ugh!!) so we've decided that I will continue BCPs but get a different formula. Then once we have proper insurance coverage, we will go back to FAM.

Grace - Thanks for the info, but unfortunately, Kaiser is not in my state (I live in the Midwest). We've had BCBS for four years now and have been
